Howard,
Congratulations on the progress, you must be extremely happy to be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel for this project and knowing it is not an oncoming train dancing Keep us informed; pictures and seeing someone enjoy their toys is always welcome.

Man that's some great looking components! I can't wait to see the finished products. You're a real good dad. I hope my young daughters end up liking firearms in the end, so I have an excuse to build them a couple. Smiler

I'm hoping so. they like sitting around watching me shoot the 22 with colibri's at the apricot destroying birds. at 2 and 4 they're still scared of loud noises though, I hope to start them at 5yo with the 22.

Now Jimmy, that is just wrong man just wrong.

Trax they are a custom profile. Jim Dubell and I discussed the desire for a medium to medium light sporter barrel and the radius of the initial taper at the chamber. The rest was left to him to taper.

You should direct that question towards the stockmaker. Do you want his cell number? Or better yet just drive out to the skeet club. rotflmo

Jimmy, which graduation are you talking about. He is not out of high school yet, so there is that one and college. Smiler

BTW, the two blanks were created by James Anderson from one pattern with both a right and left hand cheekpiece. the portion of the pattern behind the cheekpiece was left pretty much square so that I can put cast off and toe out on each stock. Just wanted you to know that James blanks don't normally come out looking like this. He is as excellent a craftsman in duplicating as he is in metal work or stockwork. One of those all around guys that we all would like to become and unfortunately we never will.

I couldn't believe how much Tyler had grown in the last picture of you and him. Will there be much difference in the length of pull in the two rifles?

Also, what will they have for butt and grip furniture?

At the rate he is growing he will be taller then I am by the time we have them done. Hopefully by this fall.

We are going to make them the same length of pull. Leather covered recoil pad and skeleton grip caps.

Thanks Howard.

It's a wonderful thing to see young people grow up loving fine firearms. I'm happy for both of you and am sure you will enjoy many hunts together with them once they are done.

I look forward to seeing them in person when they are finished.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

On honey colored blanks I would go with an ebony tip 100% of the time.

I wouldn't think of doing anything but 90 deg.

No widow peak. Save the gingerbread for those with no taste.
(sorry, I can't help it Wink)

Seems to be a post missing.

All metal work by Jim Dubell from Delta Gunshop. Stock work by Chic aka Customstox, Worthing.
Stock blanks duplicated by James Anderson.

Dakota actions: one left hand for my son Tyler, one right hand for me. Surface ground, blue printed and custom profiled, lightening cuts added, trigger bows re-profiled, etc. Lots of neat little custom touches.

Barrels custom contoured, and then bored and cut rifled by Jim, in-house. Cut at 23 inches.

Jim built up custom bases from scratch to fit Talley rings. Set up to enable mounting of 6X32 Leupold scopes as close to barrel as possible.

Jim also removed the Dakota bolt handles and installed some custom ones made by Dave Talley.

Chic and I spent hours going through blanks and selected ours from the piles of blanks Dressels have. I think we did a good job with selecting matching blanks. Chic will build them in the American Classic style. Ebony forend tips, leather covered recoil pads and nice custom sling swivel stud bases and skeleton grip caps.

Caliber is 270 Winchester.
