Can a rem 788 be cambered to a 6mm BR?
The rifle used would be a 6mm 788

It can be by rebarrelling, but not by rechambering. The 6mm BR is a little bitty thing. Case length is 1.560 for the BR and 2.233 for the 6mm Rem (6x57). Case head diameter is the same for both.

Seeing how rare the 6mm is in the 788, I would sell the gun, make a handsome profit, and go custom. The 788, in my opinion, is not the best way to go for a custom rig. Sell the gun, buy a 700 short action, and go from there. Lots of after market parts available for the 700 actions. The 788 is a fine gun as is, any modifications will ruin its value. If your 6mm is in good shape, it should bring around $400. If you bought it new, you shouldn't have paid more than $150. There are lots of guys out there that would be interested. The 6mm magazines themselves would bring over $80 each.

bluemule,
just keep the 6 mm barrel oiled after removal and use the 788.

for the price of a rebarrel, you'll have a gun that will compete in hunter class, pretty much with basic tuning. Heck, it might right now. Any reason you want the itty-bitty br? you'll have feeding problems, so it'll be a BR anyway

the 788 has the fastest locktime of anything, even faster than the 600/660, and it realatively cheap. any smith that works on 700's should have no problem...

my suggestion? would be the 7 br (hey, it's my suggestion) in a shilen or pac-nor barrel, and have at it.

Has the Hunter Class rules changed? It's been nearly 20 years since I shot HC. At that time the minimum case capacity was 35.5 gr of water (same as 30-30)

The Remington BR cases are MUCH smaller than that. In fact the 6mm Rem International was even too small.

I designed the 6x51 B&S to be the smallest 'legal' case in 1983. It's a 6mm Rem. but 2.000 long.

JBelk,

You are absolutely correct, minimum case capacity same as 30-30 Win. The "Stock" BR case does not have enough capacity, but I have seen some "stretched" BR cases in Hunter. Also, it seems the 30s are still at the top of the Hunter game due to best edge scoring. The 6BR would fit right in the Varmint Classes, though.

(removes foot(hand) from mouth>

thanks for the capacity guys, as the informal comps here say you has to be "bigger than a 223 and centerfire and a repeater, max 6x scope"

still would be fun

Yep, very true Dan. Around here in the Midwest, a majority of HC shooters use the 300 Savage, improved and shortened, to create the 30X44, 45, 46, 47, or 48. I believe the 30X44 has minimum HC legal case capacity.

I should have added in my first post that the 6BR should also do well in IBS' Varmint for score class, scored like HC, but using Varmint class rifles.
