CanadianLeftyTed Blackburn vs. other bottom metal...?
For those of you who know quality and have seen a few pieces of bottom metal in your lives, what is your take on Blackburn vs. other bottom metals (Williams, Sunny Hill, other (place your favourite here).).
I have already received feedback on this question, but I would just like to have the general opinions of a few other members here on the Ted Blackburn bottom metal.
Thanks.

Allen,
I have seen both you and Ray discuss the Burgess floorplates before. I assume this is Tom Burgess? Does he have a website or do you have contact information?

CanadianLeftyThanks Allen.
schromf- not to hijack a question away from Allen, but I believe that D'Arcy Echols has secured the limited production of Burgess's superior bottom metal and they may only now be available on Legends. You're probably best served to contact D'Arcy himself.

TreeFarmerI have used Blackburn bottom metal on all the customs that I have had built. Although I have never used it, I have seen several examples of Burgess' bottom metal and consider it excellent.

GregHeinI have always liked the styling of Blackburn better than the rest. I have used it on our actions but replaced the sheet metal box with one machined from billet.
I have not used one of Fisher's, but Don Klein says they make a Mauser stock very svelte.Since
Ted makes them I am sure they are very nice.
Sunyhill makes a very good quality product as well.
The only weak link with either is the thin boxes they supply with the M70 assembly. The Mauser boxes are better but still none to thick.
I am sure Burgess makes a fine unit but don't think they are available for sale.

Dago RedLefty,
I don't own an Echols rifle but I think that he makes his own mags for the Legends and uses Burgess for his customs. I remember somebody here is having him build them a 505 Gibbs and Tom Burgess is building the box for that.
If that is the one that I saw a couple years ago by Fisher, his round bottom, then it is something different on a stock. Letst he bottom be rounded into the connecting lines with the plate rather than requiring a flat spot around it on the bottom. Looks good, but preference between it and the old style is all personal.

CustomstoxTerry, I used one of Jerry Fishers round bottom metal on a Browning FN Safari I restocked a while ago. It is made by Ted Blackburn to Jerry's design. It has an awesome shape to it. If I can find the photos of the bottom metal in the stock, I will post one.
I liked Jim Wisners bottom metal as much as Blackburns.

<allen day>Dago Red, Echols makes his own magazine boxes for all of his rifles, no matter if they're walnut-stocked 'Classics' or McMillan-stocked 'Legends'.
On the 'Legends', you actually can order Tom Burgess bottommetal as an upgrade, and every one of these rifles that I own has Burgess bottommetal, plus a built-up and checkered bolt-release -- another good upgrade. These additions make the rifle so much nicer all the way around.
Schromf, you might call Tom and ask him about his bottommetal. You might just get lucky!

AtkinsonBurgess,Rayburn,Grissel,Blackburn, Weisner, are all good bottom metal, basically equal and your ability to finish is the key IMO....I have used only one Sunny Hill and it was nice, that was some time back. Never used a Williams but looked one over and it had no draft and thats a no no to me.

22WRFAnother very good bottom metal, if you are doing up a Mauser and you are staying close to the original cartridge size, is an 1909 Argentine Bottom metal.
However, you don't want to leave it as is. They can be modified by thinning them down a bit in the rear portion of the guard and then rounding them over a bit to where they look real nice.

z1rIf you need custom bottom metal I'd try to get Burgess to do it. At least then the geometry will be right. I had some Blackburn on hand for a project Tom is working on and wish I'd have opted to have Tom build the bottom metal instead. The Blackburn does have a nice look to it though.

HunterJimI have an intermediate length commercial M98 (originally a 7X57, converted by Heym to .30-'06). I want to convert again to .376 Steyr.
The bottom metal options are to buy, or to convert the existing unit.
Who can I actually buy the intermediate length bottom metal from today?

thanks...jim
