Ammo or Pistol problem

Yesterday after hunting I went to shoot a few rounds out of my XDM .40. After 3 rds. the pistol "locked" up. There was a round 1/2 way in the chamber & slide would not budge. Dropped it off @ local gunsmith & he said he'd never seen anything like it. Pointed out that the ""new round" was jammed into the remainder of a case. When the pistol tried to eject the fired round the rim or back half of the fired case ripped off & the new round got stuck into fired case "still in chamber".
The rounds loaded in clip were all "factory ammo & a mix of hollow points & fmj.
The stuck case was nickel. Trouble is I do not know what brand. Looking @ remaining rds. nickel cases are hollow points with small post in center. I think they are Federal
Makes me kinda nervous to rely on it for defense

Omatic, how many rounds through the gun before this episode since it had a thorough cleaning? It shouldn't have fired "out of battery" but that is one explanation for the separated case. I don't think my XD Tactical will fire out of battery but maybe the planets aligned perfectly (so to speak) to cause this. Your gunsmith should be able to have some insight into the cause.

About 100rds were fired when I first got it. Then I did a though cleaning. Probably 50 rds. before the incident without cleaning.
( I'm sorry I sold my Kimbers (45's) but I needed the $ and I did not want to carry or tote around a high $ pistol).

I also believed it fired out of battery.

Gunsmith really couldn't say why. In fact he didn't even charge me for fixing it. Said it was worth the experience, It took him about a hour.

BTW My son bought one(XDM) & I fired his a lot
which made me buy mine.

My son also has the XD Tactical but his has way more rounds through it than mine without a single hiccup of any kind. Truthfully I would trust a Springfield XD further than I would a Kimber. A guy my other son knows had two Kimbers, one his wife carried and the other that he carried, they both broke the extractor with a fairly low round count. I have heard of this happening with other Kimbers and the usual culprit is too weak of recoil spring. All it takes is one episode to lose faith in a piece of equipment, and I understand completely.

Had to ship XDM back to Springfield. 3 more case seperations. When I explained what was happening they immediately e-mailed me a pre-paid shipping label.
Said they never heard of a problem as mine.
Esxpecialy on the XDM model

I suspect an ammo problem.

Had a similar thing happen to me while running the first magazine through a brand new, department issued .40 Sig 226. It was .40 Federal brass and proved to be an early run lot that had some issues with case web strength. A similar occurrence happened a couple days later to the Range Officer. The cartridge case came apart at the rim. There was a flash and an increase in felt recoil. It loosened the grip and blew the extractor goodness-knows-where.

Did you feel/see anything different at the shot?

Coincidently Springfield called me today and said the pistol was fixed and they were shipping it out today.
The problem was the extractor.
Without going into details they told me after the fix the tested it with all different ammo and I could depend on it in the worst case scenario.
Turnaround time was quick & they really seemed concerned. Plus No CHARGE for anything.
Build date was 06 & I bought it in 07 (NEW)
Nice to see a company that stands behind it's product.

Good to hear I wonder if the extractor was holding it out of battery

My thoughts exactly. That would explain the case separation.
I do have that same ammo loaded in a couple of clips which I plan to shoot in my sons XDM tomorrow which I have with me now that I am on the road. So I will know if it was an ammo problem.

(I didn't want to chance it until my pistol was fixed & have his loaded wit RP Golden Sabre
