I was looking at a buddy's Mauser. It is drilled & tapped for a 1 pc base. We tried fitting a leupold 98 base but he hole on the bridge of this mauser is drilled so that the center of it is about where the rear edge of the hole in the base is. Thus it appears that we are off the width of a 6x48 screw. We had a Leupold 98 and Leupold FN base on hand as well as a Redfield FN base and the hole spacing on all were the same. Anyone know if any of the other brands have the rear hole a bit further back. Or, if the Redfield 98 base may have different spacing. I know that the hole spacing on the Millett base is different but can't remember if it is closer togther or farther apart like what I need. Sorry I can't give the actual distance between hole but I didn't have any calipers with me at the time. I know this rifle was put together quite some time ago. I wonder if it may have had a Buehler base?

Help!

By the way, the charger hump hasn't been removed so we need one to fit a 98 not FN.

Redfield makes about 4 or 5 different Mauser mounts.
Take it to a store that has them all and start comparing them.

There are 2 one piece bases for Mausers. One fits a FN & the other M98s/98ks. The hole spacing is different in each.

They may have scaled back their line.
I know that I have quite a few different Redfields, some of them a probably discontinued.

If worst comes to worst, you can always buy some blank Weaver base or the base for the 336 and have your gunsmith drill to suit.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I have a similar problem with a Remington Model 37 I bought not long ago. It's been modified and is drilled and tapped for a one piece mount. I can't figure out what mount works on it. If I measured the hole spacings, could someone see if they have one to fit? I'll buy it from whoever has one.
Thanks in advance,
Don

I had a similar problem and my gunsmith drilled and counter sunk a new hole for the rear screw in the base. Works perfectly. The new hole did intersect a bit with the old but it made no difference.

What you need is a Redfield Mauser 98 base,
JR-M 47156. FN bases do not have the same Hole spacing as 98 bases.
FN hole spacing between the front and rear is 4.350, 98's are 4.290.
Hope this helps.

J Bennett,

Thx but are you sure of the spacing? I only ask because the Redfield FN base I tried had hole spacing identical the the Leupy 98 base and both were too short not too long. The variation you mentioned sounds about right but it should be reversed I think.. Unless of course the holes were drilled improperly to begin with.

Thanks for taking the time to measure and answer!

-Mike

Check to see if the Mark X Mauser base fits. The early Mk X actions were about one half a hole off as compaired to the standard 98 bases. It could be any number of bases shimmed to fit that action. I have seen them all and if you want the base to fix the holes, try ordering a blank base then drill holes to match the rifle.

The Mark X spacing uses the FN bases, which are different than a 98.

J bennett,

Thx again. I called Redfield and they gave measurements of 4.350" for the FN and 4.275" for the 98. Looks like you were right. Too Bad, that is the opposite of what I need. I need one that is a smidge longer. Looks like the easiest solution would be to weld up the rear hole and recut a new one. Easier than making a new base that I won't get paid for.

Both FN/Mark X bases and 98's have been tried. Of those tried the spacing has been the same. Obvoiusly the Redfield 98 base differs but not in the direction I need it to. Frowner

Sorry that did not work. I have measured all of the different brands of bases that I have and none will work
Can you use the shorter 98 base, re drill and tap. Install plug screw in existing hole.
Just a thought.

J Bennett,

Wish it were that easy but the holes would overlap and make a figure 8. I think the next easiest option is to weld up the rear hole in the base and drill a new one in the proper location. Then reblue it. If it were mine, I'd make a two piece base that would fit but it's not mine.

I appreciate the help! Smiler

Do you have access to a milling machine? If so, set up and cut the top of the base equal amounts front to rear on each side of where you need the hole. Then cut lower part of the hole just enough to get the screw in. From the top it looks as if it was designed that way. Do I make sense? This is how all of B-Square no gunsmithing mounts are made.
