I bought a boyds varmint thumb hole. It should be here in a couple days. When I ordered it I wanted it unfinished, well they dont offer then unfinished anymore.

My question is I want to spray it with some duplicolor gloss auto clear. My question is can I spray clear over the finish or is that not an option. Ive seen what oils can do to clear on an car. Im afraid that I will have nothing but problems clearing it. Has anyone done that before.

Do you know for a fact the finish on the Boyds stock is oil ? I'll bet it's just some type of a spray on varnish or poly. Call them and ask.

Im not sure what it is for sure, I will have to call them.

That would be sweet if I could sand and hit it with the crossfire clear

i redid a boyds varmint stock for a fellow a couple years back & the finish was about as far away from oil as you can get.

Ok sounds good, I called them and the gal I talked to said they use a acid bawed finish. Is there something a person can put on the stock before clearing to really make it pop, or will it be plenty bright with light sanding with some 600 and some clear coat

I would sand it smooth before appying any other finish, no finish is better than the base coat, start with imperfections and you will end with imperfections.

You should be just fine.
Here's a Boyds Stock I did with Sherwinn Williams Gloss Pre-Cat.

If the finish is kinda slick hit with 220 until the shiny is gone then Scotch-Brite.
