am helping a buddy put together a swift on a mark x action. the action's rails seem to have been cut for a normal 30-06 case type. i did find a mark x magazine made for the short rounds (when he got it the action had a GI magazine/guard unit). the rounds fit fine but what seems to be happening is the rim of the round being fed is hanging in the extractor groove of the next round down (winchester brass) and thus dragging both those fwd until the inevitable jam. have never owned a swift nor even looked at the mag box setup of one. is there some trick we should be aware of? was thinking of a shoulder for the case shoulders to abut against of all except the round on top of course but this will require modifying the follower and i don't want to do that just yet. i also tried it with the insert removed and a standard follower and a vz-24 follower just for grins. same thing only worse. roger

A Swift needs to have a taper block installed in order to hold the case in the proper location. Place the block in the rear of the box. Also bend the spring to move up the ramp smoother. The taper block needs to be about 1/4 of inch at the top to nothing at the bottom. It can be done, but an action made for the swift is the best way to go.

yeah, that makes sense. that'd position the rim fwd of anything it could remotely catch on. this gun is already built so it has to be made to work. i should be able to make a sheet metal block like the one already there but angled accordingly. thanks roger

I have a Winchester Model 70 in 220 Swift. The magazine has a removable plate in the back of the magazine and notches that it fits into. This allows adjustment of the angle for the cartridges in the magzine so the magazine can be adjusted to work for 243 or 220 Swift. It should be fairly easy to do for a Mauser and you can then easily change the angle until it feeds properly and the rims don't hang up on the Swift. It feeds the Swift perfectly.

i looked thru parts lists for ruger, winchester and savage - those i knew were available in swift - and there didn't seem to be any different part numbers for mag boxes or followers and as you noted on the m70, they do work so it can't be that big a trick. i've just not hit the right combination yet. i made a temp block to see if i can get the shape right and the 1st one didn't work so i had to glue another layer onto it to increase the angle. there are bound to be hundreds of mausers around in this ctg. if anybody else can do it i know i can. even the old fn supreme was chambered for this for a while. would like to get a good look at one taken apart but i doubt i'd be that lucky. thanks roger
