It seems every takedown / switch barrel you see is a Mauser, ( actually I have seen one Springfield ) so I'm wondering....has anyone ever done one on a P14 or M17 Enfield action? I would have thought that the square ( Acme ) thread would be sturdier and more durable, when attaching and removing the barrel than the normal pitched thread form?.....just curious, any thoughts? A square thread and an acme self centering thread are two different profiles. I would have to refer to the machinists hand book but if i remember correctly the acme is 14.5 degrees on the angle and square is 90 degrees. I do think the square thread of a 14/17/03 would support a take down system as well as any threaded system.

It don't matter; remember the Savage 99 TD? What kind of threads did they have? And they made takedowns on them too. Square. (For the first million or so, then they went to V.) What design of TD are you wanting? Interrupted thread? Full thread? How will you lock the barrel on? Many ways to do a takedown bolt action.

I have seen mausers with vee threads and with acme threads. In the end, I don't think it matters but I would favor acme or vee over square. Regards, Bill

Sorry, my mistake, the reference to "square" thread was only to identify it as different to a normal pitched thread, my question was mainly about action type rather than thread type. As something that I may never get around to making, a take down or switch barrel rifle has always intrigued me, even if purely for the exercise of building one, more than its actual use in the field. My favourites are Ray's BRNO and Duane's 338/416....if I was to attempt one, it would be in 416 Taylor and 8mm-338. Roger

It was a Mauser take down built by Martin Hagn the receiver was from Hartmann & Weiss, I believe. Martin has shown me some pretty fascinating pieces over the years. Regards, Bill.

Ok, a new one. Even the Black Powder Mauser 71s have V threads.
