Where to put sling swivel studs on shotgun stock?

I just got back from turkey hunting in northern Missouri. My tom scaled in at only 25.5 pounds, but by the time I got him back to the house from the field, I would have sworn he weighed at least 80 pounds. One thing I really wish I had was a sling for my shotgun. The front already has a place for a sling swivel. I picked up a sling swivel stud for the back, but I have a couple questions. I read some time back as to exactly where this should be installed, but I can't remember. Also, should I drill a pilot hole first? Any help would be appreciated, before I screw it up.

Sam,

Drill a 1" deep pilot hole to a diameter of .190 and then drill a starter hole of about .250 diameter just deep enough to get the threading started without tearing up the hole. I like to place the rear stud 2" from the actual toe of the stock. Some people prefer it 1 1/2 inch. Do not include the recoil pad in your measurement. If you have a 1" recoil pad, then place the stud 3" from the toe of the pad.

Good luck,

Malm
