Okay then, for all you closet AR15 fans, as I stated above, this is not gunsmithing but rather assembly. I know this type firearm doesn’t appeal to everyone but I wanted something for the car/truck/tractor and walking around the property. Vermin control.

Many years ago I headed up the machining/design section of an AR15/M16/M4 manufacturer. With employee pricing what it was I built myself about a bizillion different model ARs. Well, actually more like 2 dozen but you get the picture, one of each model, one for the wife, one for each child and then the grandchildren. Anyway, I’d build it one way, then didn’t like something and buy different parts and rebuild it. Can’t return used parts so they ended up in a box.

The other day when I decided I wanted something compact so I dug around and this is what I came up with. Barrel meets the 16” minimum and it is 32” OAL. Still need to shoot it with a coat of barbeque black paint, get some sort of sights and maybe a single point sling but at least I used up some parts.

It's gunsmithing , with a small "G".
I paint all ARs either Olive Drab Green, (same color as my WW2 jeeps and trucks) or Earth Brown.
There are enough black ones on the planet and I want them to stand out.

Maybe I'll do one in gray. I've done OD Green, Sand Tan and Pink. Gray, Blue and Black Tiger Stripe might be cool.

Legos/tinkertoys for big kids, rainy day fun when you have to stay inside. I enjoy it as well, and no it's not gunsmithing.

AR assembly can be gunsmithing....with any size letter you wish to put in front of it (G)

It depends on what you do/machine

I've cut back handguards and re-threaded them

Cut barrels back and ported them or weld on flash/brakes

Polished set and ground....even wire EDM'd trigger components

Plugged gas holes and moved blocks foward and rearward

Not to mention TiG welding on them here and there

And so the apparent "G"unsmithing police with the large "G" have spoken.

I guess that funny grip thing is a Canadian Government requirement? Seems to have a flash suppressor and bayonet lug and a detachable 30 round magazine. Why the funny grip?

Dunno Dave.

I stole the photo off the interweb. I thought that funny grip was an American thingy. Maybe its a California addition, for the limp wristed members of the shooting fraternity ?

popcorn Oh I'm gonna get feedback on that one. Where did I leave my ear muffs and fireproof suit?

Yeah, some days I have dreams of Quebec snapping off and floating out to sea too. But lets not get too carried away here Dave. Trump won the election, the Clintons are finished, Bernie the Bum has been exposed for the money grubber that he really is, the odds of a new cold war just dropped to almost zero, Obama is out on his ass, Megyn Kelly is kaput, Vladimir Putin just dryly slapped Obama in the face with a wet fish over the ambassador expulsions and all the news groups in the USA have been proven to have been government/wallstreet propaganda machines for the last decade or so. At what point do we wake up and find the devil standing over us with an I.O.U. for services rendered ?

A little 'encouragement' along the San Andres fault wouldn't hurt. Smiler

Sell that that breaks away to the Japs, and the national deficit might hit $0USD (Sorry Rod, had to clarify).

Sights will be in tomorrow. Turned out I didn't have a front sight I could mount on the gas block. Decided to test fire it for function. 20 rounds fired as fast as I could pull the trigger. I'll get some paint thus weekend, get the sights on and zeroed.

I think back in the days when the name was coined. A gunsmith, capitalized or other, was a person who could build or repair just about anything gun related known to man. Now days, we are all just specialists of one facet of the trade or another. There are of course people who will argue that until they're blue in the face. But until I see them making match quality barrels, building double rifles with hammers, files and chisels while turning out horseshoes on a 5 axis mill or EDM, I'm just going to sit back, suck on my coffee and ignore their protests.

coffee I'm just kinda funny that way.
