I know there's not a lot of love here for Cerakote, especially on fine custom rifles. I personally prefer a rust blue finish over any of the coatings, however I do end up cerakoting a lot of guns for customers. I recently tried the new "Elite series" they offer. It's supposed to be tougher, thinner, and slicker than their traditional "H" series.
I was impressed with the results. It applied a little easier in that it didn't seem to build up in areas that are difficult to get to (interior of the action, etc). After coating and before polishing the bolt I cycled and found that it was indeed quite slick. The only negative I experienced was that when I did polish the Cerakote off of the bolt, it took me twice as long! I usually tape it off and quickly shoe-shine with 320 grit, then 400, then hit the buffing wheel within a few minutes. With this stuff I had to start with 220 grit to cut through it and then it still took me 20 minutes to get it all off.
Here's some photos of the finished product. This is what they call "Midnight" which seems to mimic traditional bluing better than some.

Very nice work indeed! But as you say, not a lot of love for cerakote. As my gunsmith friend said when these type of finishes came out: Paint is for cars. He is still right after all these years I believe.

I do use the painted finishes like Cerakote, Durakote, Guncoat, etc, on utilitarian rifles with plastic stocks, etc. Paint does have a place in gun finishes.
The above one does look good though.

Thanks guys. I tend to agree with the sentiment here. I prefer a traditional blued metal finish on a wood stocked rifle. However I mostly hunt with fiberglass stocked rifles with painted on metal finishes. Last year it rained and snowed half of rifle season here. When I got out of the woods each day I would just blow off the excess water with an air hose and leave the gun in the truck.
