Jeff,
Congrats on a fine shooting Mauser. Like, Wstrnhunter, I bought mine completely sporterized(right down to the jeweled bolt) for $150 and had a new barrel put on and to be honest it turned out much better than I expected. I don't have anything against Model 70's either, but there is good reason why the 98 Mauser is the most copied action ever.

Well now that we have agrued out all the benefits and detractions of actions, lets try to help him out, on finding actions, like he originally asked.

Sarco has some M98 actions, get a copy of shotgun news or give them a call. I haven't actually seen any of them, and if someone is that neck of the woods a hands on report would be welcomed. I cant rememmber the price but under a $100.00 seems to ring a bell.

I also noticed in there advert that they had some original FN actions. But they are "NOT" heat treated, the price was reasonable, but figure heat treating costs, in the cost buildup.

Other good sources, I am all ears, as these seem to be hard to find anymore, especially the desirable actions.

Argentinian made 1909's seem to be available for about $130 from a few sources.

VZ 24 are available fron Gun's 'n Stuff for $80 but they say "minor pitting" and won't elaborate.

Schromf:

you make some good points; the actions you point out are all better accuracy-wise than the Mod 70.

I just don't see anything the 98 has that the Win70 doesn't.

The word SAFETY comes to mind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you can't beat that big flange on the 98 bolt shroud when something comes back in your face. How about the 1 pc firing pin vs the Win variety. The 98 bolt stop does a much better job at slowing down those little chunks flying back at your cheek before it gets to the shroud and the action is not prone to fragmenting due to it's case hardened construction. They both make a fine CUSTOM rifle when done properly and there is ABSOLUTELY no accuracy difference when both are bedded properly IN A HUNTING RIFLE. The longer "stronger" lock time of the 98 may provide a convenient excuse if the shooter has a flinch. Read that "Loose nut behind the trigger" Loose nuts should practice with a matchlock to work out the flinch, not come up with a poor excuse to blame the rifle when they can't shoot too well.

I bought three from the Trek Inn bookstore at Trinidad State Jr. College for that price about 2 months ago.
Trek Inn

These are actions only.

Since then I saw one other source for barreled actions mentioned on this board but can't recall.

The bookstore still has more.

I tried to email that site to see if they had any such actions.
The email address bounced: dan.nuschy@tsjc.cccoes.edu

Okay guys, feeling the heat, so here is my response:

- When was the last year the Mauser dominated the target circles? It has been a loooooong time. At least the Mod70 has some showing well after the Mauser left the range.

AnotherAZWriter

In Sweden the target version of the mauser 96 is still are very common at the national matches. Our new national rifle a version of the Sauer 205 sport

Thats' the other source I saw, thanks Clemson.

The ones I got from the Trek Inn were FMAP actions only but the only pitting was on the side of the magazine well, none on the action itself.

1909's are available from L. C. Enterprises. These are not the best that I have used, but they are usable with some work on polishing and grinding. They have both Argentine and DWM actions available, apparently stripped from Cavalry Carbines. They will sell a barreled action to a C&R license holder.

- Call any guy who builds custom accuracy rifles and tell him you want to build one with a Mauser. Listen for the response. It will take some time for him to regain his composure unless he busts out laughing.

Stepchild: My turn?

I once fired a three shot group sitting (no bipod, just a sling) at 200 yards. It was .375 inches. What does that prove? I get lucky sometimes. If your gun shoots that great all the time, good for you. Be sure to speed up that lock time, however, because when you shoot in the wind you need it.

My simple statement was if a guy doesn't care between a Mauser and a Mod70, get the Mod 70.

If you want to read why the Mauser isn't the best in terms of accuracy, read "The Modern Rifle" by Jim Carmichel. A little dated, but still a good book. Or blow the dust off of Warren Page's "The Accurate Rifle." Don't read anything more recent if you want to see any mention of Mausers, positive or negative, because modern books on accuracy rifles don't even mention Mausers.
