New Style Skeleton Grip Cap poll

As you may have read in the floormetal poll I got some of my quotes back today. I placed an order for 125 grip caps in various styles today. I see that the price for these from Brownells has jumped drastically since last November. My catalog #59 says the retail price for these is $25. If you order one as a dealer they are well over $30 now. Caps # 1 & 4 shown below are drawn directly from the original pencil on vellum prints dated 8-6-81 that Pete Grisel sent me last year. Now that they are way overpriced in my opinion I'm willing to plunk my money down have them made and sell them. At this time I'm not taking orders. When I have them in my hands and ready to ship I'll post something in the classified section. I've added a few bells & whistles to the lineup. Side profiles A & B can be matched to any of the inlets 1-6. My order today is for 25 with side A and 25 with side B and 50 without the window dressing on the side. The remaining 25 are 2 screw solid caps with domed top. Unless I'm hit with any hidden costs the pricing should be $23.25 for the normal skeletons with inlets 1-6 and 2 the screw solid. The jazzed up side variations will run $30.75 with any 1-6 inlet. What kind of interest is out there?

Question:
Whats your favorite inlet profile? 1through 6

Choices:
#1
#2
#3
#4
#5
#6

Question:
What's your favorite side profile? A or B

Choices:
A POINT
B SCALLOP
NONE FLAT BOTTOM CAP

Question:
Would you want one with the side profile option A or B?

Choices:
With extra side profile
Without, just standard flat skeleton cap

Can't vote in your poll because I don't like either of the two side patterns you have and system tells me I have to answer all the questions. If you add a third choice for a flat profile that would get my vote which is what I think you're asking further into the survey.

I added the third option for flat. When I did this it removed the votes that were already cast. There was only 4 & I voted once.

I'd like a plain ole simple one like Talley used to make! And properly made ebony inserts to glue on the grip.

Didn't Fajen do this when the company was owned by Larry Potterfield?

Mr Anderson

What is the size you ordered? ie, the length and width. Will you have these available in more than one size? I think you might find your original 100 go pretty fast at that price.

Some caps are too large for my taste, I think the Dressel's idea of several sizes is great, unfortunately they only have the solid single screw variety.

Please also post a reference on this forum when you will accept orders. I am sure you don't want to get ahead of yourself, but we don't all check the classifieds regularly.

I will be looking forward to watching your progress with this. Once again, rough stampings with the screws would be fine for me. No need to have them all trimmed up, polished and pretty.

Thanks

The first batch will be the standard 1.81" X 1.3". After I get a feel of what styles actually sell then I'm thinking of offering a smaller one in the more popular styles first. It all depends on how fast they go. If I have to sit on them for a while at least it's better than the stock market as of late. CRYBABY

Having seen a few Dak caps lately made me think why on Gods green earth would they round off the top surface with a buffing wheel??? What a waste of time. Makes it harder to bring it down flush to the wood.

On the smaller cap I'd probably use the same screws. Those little buggers are quite spendy to produce. Highest quote I got was over $2.50 each. Smaller caps should look pretty well scaled. I did use some bigger skel caps while working at company X and they used the same size inlet as a standard cap. Looked a little funky to me.

Another thought I've had is offering an insert CNC pre inlet on the customer's wood. For those who don't mind an insert. Pricing would probably run around $10-$15 for this. Depending on cutter costs. I'm still going back & forth with Prototrak CNC on weather their kit will fit my mill.

The caps will be CNC machined not castings or stampings.

I really like #1 with an "A" profile. It would seem to me if the customer didn't like it, it could be ground off in one pass.

i guess i am a simpleton. i like #4 with a flat bottom. i think if you offered an ebony insert to match the cut out it would sell well. i have offered to make the insert from the customers choice of tip wood for several years now and i believe about 90 % like that look.

No matter how nice the rifle, I don't like skeleton grip caps nor buttplates. Overdoing it IMO, but I know a lot of people loves them.
I'd rather have an engraved steel - or ebony - grip-cap and rubber buttpad on any rifle.

If that price holds, you can put me down for a couple of 1As. Very nice.
