Do a search, there has been quite a bit of discussion of these actions awhile back. Basically, the Granite Mountain, Prechtl, Wells, Vektor are pretty close facsimiles of the original #20 double square bridge Oberndorf. The 50's vintage Brevex looks more like a jumbo FN. All very high quality, expensive. Lower cost alternatives requiring a little additional gunsmithing, but not quite the classic 98 Mauser look, include the CZ550, Brno (CZ) ZKK-602, Olympic Arms Ultra Mag, Montana PH, Enfield/Rem30, Noreen, etc.

fla3006,

I have seen the discussions you mentioned and have most of the threads saved under my "favorites" section. I have learned a bit in this manor but, not all I wanted.

As much as I like these forums its often hard to get beyond the superficial when discussing any given topic. My initial question was an attempt to get a "much" more indepth assesments of these actions than I could get from reading brochures or forum threads. I was particulary hoping to hear from many of the top shelf riflesmiths we have here who actually work on and build rifles from them. I think learning from people who actually get "under the hood" is the
best way to get an accurate assesment of what is out there and how it all stacks up.

Thanks,
Dave

The actions I am specifically referring to are produced by Granite Mountain, Hartmann & Weiss, R. Johannsen, Wells and Gentry.

And don't forget Karl-Heinz Ritterbusch ( http://www.jagdgewehre.com/ger/gerframe.htm )!

Btw, the actions R.Johannsen uses are produced by Gottfried Prechtl.

I have spoken with Hartmann & Weiss and for standard calibers they use old DWM 1909 Modelo Argentino The best ever made IMO.
I do not know who makes their Magnum actions.

Cheers,

Andr

Dave- also check Prechtl's website:
www.golmatic.de
These, which are used by several German makers, Granite Mountain, Vektor and possibly Noreen are the finest I have seen in 45 years of active gun collecting and building. Just as important of course is who finishes the action into the final product. Sorry, but I don't have all the technical specs easily at hand. If money is no barrier, I'd go with one of these and not look back.

What I know:

H&W has thickened recoil lugs.
Johannsen tried to be faithful to the original mauser spec with minor improvments.
Granite Mountain has a 0.750" bolt body diameter

Beautiful machining but keep the pressures down or heat treat. DWM Argentines and Brazilians are soft, subject to setback.
