The untreated/unfinished bolt body on my rifle is experiencing some minor surface corrosion (not pitting).
I am not a big fan of jeweling/engine turning. None of my other rifles are experiencing any corrosion. What would be causing this?
I do not have any machine tools or a dremmel tool at my winter home.
I am thinking to just use some Flitz and steel wool to remove this surface corrosion. Will doing this create any issues?
Is there a better solution? What type of steel wool should I use.

I'd guess it's caused by humidity (left in a hot car for a few hours in summer maybe on way back from range or hunting; dehumidifier in safe needs to be put in the oven again) and/or somebody touched it and didn't wipe it down with oil afterwards and sweat or skin oil will cause rust.

I'd try solvent (Hoppes) first with a rag, with a toothbrush, and then with 0000 steel wool if the others don't work to take off the surface rust. Sometimes I've been able to take light surface rust off a blued surface without ruining the blue gently using 0000 steel wool.

Then put oil (RemOil or other guns oil) on it to prevent re-rusting. Or wax.

Frontier Big 45 metal Cleaner Pad is your friend when it comes to rust and corrosion removal without damaging blue or polished surface finish. Try one, you'll be amazed with the results.

I use a belt sander with scotchbrite belts. No time for the hand methods.
Never do anything I do, however.

Green Scotchbrite and oil does a great job. When I used to run a gun store a few years back new Kimber .45's would come in with rust on the white steel parts(barrels). I would remove and oil or grease but it would still come back. Never figured it out.

Works the best on this particular bolt body.

Flitz or Bon-ami with Kroil or automotive rubbing compound , available at Walmart or any parts store . Bon-ami only , it has NO chlorine .
