Howdy all,

I have a Warne one-piece steel base (picatinny type) for a Winchester 70. I would like to have some of the rear part of the base milled away so I can keep the Lyman 48 (?) sight on the rifle. Basically removing the last two sections of rail while keeping both rear bridge screws. I realize I can remove the Lyman slide, but I'd rather keep it on the rifle.

Is there anyone here on AR that would want to do a small milling job like this?

Thanks,

Wouldn't a hacksaw and file be pretty easy?

PSmith,

I've done exactly as JTEX suggested with another mount. Worked fine.

I have done two different versions of that for the reasons you did.

The one methid with a one piece would be to cut it off short and use only the front three holes.

The second method was using 2 piece Leupold QR bases and had a friend mill the part of the base where the screws went through and also the torx heads down until the slide on the Lyman was down low enough to zero. I would suspect this is what you are needing done and it will take a mill. He did it while the base was installed on the gun.

Well you have two rear holes to deal with and that bar goes between the holes, so it may not work on some guns...on some guns you may be able to use just the front hole of the rear base and the bar may fit...you need to know this before you go to sawing..

There are other options and the best one is use talley bases with Talley QD rings and a Talley QD peep. but you have to remove it but its easy to do.....

But if your head is made up then I suggest a Redield or Leupold base with the" Little Bo Peep" sight attached to the rear of the Redfield or Leupold base. It does not interfere with any scope. It flips up and down and it works. These options are much better than what you are attempting and your peep stays sighted in and out of the way.

just contact Jim Kobe or DPCD. I can recommend their work very highly.

Both have fast turn around, and are reasonably priced.
