Gringo CazadorWhere to get cheap Screw files
Anybody know where to get screw files cheap. They are expensive from brownells, thats the only place I know to get them, 20 bucks ea. I did a few searches but didnt find anything, not even sure I know the correct name for that type of file.

well then.....dont do that....If you break one.....just keep using. I busted mine a long time ago. Still works.
You could probably rig something up that you could hook a donkey to but then you have to buy donkey food.

CustomstoxBilly, aka cheap bastard, lol. I have not seen them anywhere else. You could buy a mill, I know Mark Stratton cuts his oh a mill, just a tad bit more expensive that the files.
Jeffe, these are for cutting the slots, the sides are "safe" and the edge cuts, 3 different widths available from Brownells. > $20 each

jeffeossoChic,

I told him to send the screws to me, and whatever thickness slitting saw he wanted, and I'd do it for him!!
a mill might be spendy, but me doing it by hand is BAD

ShopCartRacingI was just thinking to say to use a slitting saw.
I just recently discovered there things as I was looking for an easier way to cut the extractor groove on a Winchester M70.
I have not used them yet but that sounds like the perfect operation.

Bill SovernsHey if it helps I've had the same screw slot file for 8 years.

Glen71While we are on the subject of cutting screw slots, does anyone use the fixture that Brownells sells for centering the slot in the screw head?

Michael_D_UllmanTry Congress Tools in CT. There phone number is 1-800-243-2653. That is where I get my files and polishing stones. It seems to me that they were a little less than Brownells. They are good people to deal with. I have been using them for about ten years now.

Reminds me of my friend who's half Irish and half Scot. One half wants to get drunk, but the other half doesn't want to pay.

Paul HGetting back to the belt sander recomendation, you could get some cheap jewelers files and turn them into screw files by grinding off the side teeth, and grinding down to the screw slot thickness you need.
Then again, sometimes expensive tools end up being cheap in the long run
