1. Does WBY have two action lengths (i.e. one for .240 thru 7mm and a "longer" one for .300 and up)? 2. Has anyone built a custom rifle on the MK V action? Good Shooting,

HBB, I am not sure about the lengths, but I think they are all the same. We have built several custom rifles on Weatherby Mk V action. They are no different than say the Remington 700 to work with. ------------------ www.accuratereloading.com

HBB, check the Weatherby site to confirm, but I believe they have two Mark V actions. Although similar, one is designed for 30-06 and shorter cartridges. It is a little lighter and it only has 6 locking lugs. The larger action accomodates all the magnum cartridges and has 9 locking lugs. The Vanguard is another story. I believe it uses a Howa action.

Weatherby uses two sizes if action (their action, not the Vanguard which is/was a Howa) as previously posted. The small one was originally their Varmintmaster back when. They did a few mods on it to accomodate slightly larger (30-06 sized) cartridges and there you are. - Dan

Patrick, I agree with you. My first rifle is Weatherby from 1974. Now it wears 300 Jarrett barrel and is extremely accurate. I have to mention that older Weatherby in 30-06 caliber ( Japan or Germany made)were built on big, nine lugs actions.

The japanese Weatherby mark V's were all the same length actions from the .257, .270, 7mm to the 460's. The bolt has a grove that can be milled to length for appropriate bolt throw. The bolts are .715 on all and therefore can be opened up for even the big cases. The down side is that the action is quite heavy and there is'nt much you can do to lighten it.
