Kingfisher thanks for your input....if I leave as a .300 I will make a RUM I think. The cz 550 Safari .300 winmag uses the same action as the .416 Rigby the difference being obviously in the bolt face and rails. I think it is the only rifle which uses a magnum square bridged mauser style action for the .300 win round !! PC.

Not to sound rude but why change from such a great round as the 300 wm? The "Super 30's" gain you a couple hundred fps but have serious throat erosion and barrel life issues. Not to mention recoil. Just my 2 cents.

A couple of other options that will gain you some speed PC Re-chamber to .300 Weatherby or Keep the Winchester chamber and throat it to seat 200 gr spitzers flush with the base of the neck.......might get you to 3000 fps in the right barrel .....

Thanks for the imfo M1. In Australia many Aussies do a bit of over the bonnet of the ute shooting at feral animals I suppose that is why I was looking at some longer range chamberings but it does not seem to be that much difference I suppose.

PC, Most of the deer and elk I have shot have been with a 308 Win. All have been 1 shot kills. that is because I stalk as close as possible and put the shot where it counts. Next to the 308 the 300 Win Mag is my favorite hunting round. I also have a 1000 yd target rifle built in 300wm. I used to think faster was better but now that I have a litle more experience I realize that isnt always the case. I have a decent selection of calibers but for just about any situation except dangerous game the 300 Winnie will do it in style.

PC, You won't be able to rechamber to 300 H&H because the 300 H&H is much smaller in diameter than the 300 Win. If I was you and knowing your other guns then I think a rebarrel to 300 H&H would be about ideal as that would go together nicely with yor other CZs in 9.3, 375 and 416. For the big banger end of town I would do the 300 RUM over the 30/378. Mike

Thanks for all the input folks, The .300 RUM chambering will clean up a .300 winnie chamber if I opted for that....and Mike does make sense with the .300 H&H I reckon Mike you could set the barrel back 1cm or there abouts and then you may be right I don't know....but Bob could do it I reckon.

PC, I think one of the advantages of the 300 RUM is that you can load it down and lower pressure instead of pushing the envelope with the 300 Win. I used a 300 RUM last season to take 3 deer and several hogs. I loaded 180 gr partitions at 3100 fps and it performed great. My nephew shoots a 300 Wtby and I load it to 3100 fps with 180 gr partitions. Both loads are very accurate and low pressure. You also have the capability to maximize heavy bullets. Ralph

Thanks Ralph, also with the huge cz550 magnum action you have heaps of room to fit the .300 RUM and plenty of room to seat bullets....the .300 RUM may be better utilised with 190 &200gr bullets rather than 180's and 165's ??

If you're willing to spend the money on rebarreling, instead get a reamer made up for the H&H case, say the 308-358 STA, and your favorite 200g bullet seated out to 3.75". That'll keep expansion ratio down in the realms of sanity, use that long action, and get you lots of power. And ps, it's not always about drop. Less drop is a sign that the bullet is going faster. [...] After looking, you would have about 1.23" from COL to base of neck, and could easily seat a 165g in such a case without much freebore. Or even better, bring the shoulder up to = .308" neck. You'll have about 10% less powder room than the RUM, but maybe in 308 that's a good thing.

Bwana B, I have never heard of the 308-358 sta, who invented this round and have you heard much about it ?? I am also a little ignorant on expansion ratio's ?? As Pauline Hanson would have said "Please Explain"

PC, I generally choose a bullet weight based on the game I am hunting. Where I hunt a very large deer will go 175 lbs and the hogs are usually under 200 lbs with an occaisional one at 250 lbs( these are what we call Piney Woods Rooters-no farming in the area thus they don't get large). For larger plains game and elk I would definitely go to 200 grs or better definitely without a plastic tip. One other advantage of this cartridge is the readily available cheap brass. Ralph
