would you gentlemen have any concerns about building a 404 J on a VZ-24?

None whatever; last year I built a .404 on a 1909 Argentine (known for setback, I know). Pressures on the 404 are not high and the bolt backthrust is not high, and a vz24 will take it. I modified the mag in the back quite a bit (even thinned the bolt stop) to minimize removal of metal from the feed ramp/ front locking recess. Works fine.

Yes,

I am concerned for your safety. It would probably best if I tested the finished product for you for, say, nine months (give or take a year or two). No need to thank me; I am just looking out for your safety old friend.

It is too much trouble when you can use something that is a better fit from the beginning.

Although I have built a number of 404 Jefferys' on std. mod. 98s and the VZ-24 would be fine, but any mod. 98 std. action even when converted is a blivit, 10 lbs. or crap in a 5 lb. bag so to speak, in other words its just too much of a tight fit to satisfy me...therefore the last 3 or 4 I have built have been on fully modified either Rem. or Win. made Enfields, both military and Remington factory guns. Lots of room, and very much a Mauser in looks and design when finished and they work with the 416 Rigby, 505 Gibbs, or 500 Jefferys as well..I have made several on Mauser mod. 20 magnum actions and they work great and are ideal, but the action alone will send your kid to college for a year or two...

BTW, I will have two fully modified Enfields barreled actions for sale pretty soon, one in 404 and the other in 416 Rem. I will probably put them for sale in the classifeid when I get them from Dennis Olson..I'm not in a stock making mood this year, and intend to do more hunting than usual. Age and medical problems have made me decide to stop and smell the roses and do a lot more hunting and fishing as opposed to booking hunts and making stocks. Also I have started team roping again, and the hand is working pretty good and I intend to do a lot more of that while I still can..I'm trying to make my roping last until I'm at least 90..

True; P14s or 17s work much better and easier but I assumed you just wanted one on a 98.

The barreled action was done by a nationally known and respected gunsmith, who does post here on occasion. We've become friends, and he is making me a screaming deal on it.
