Need help - Mark X rear sight blade

I just purchased an Interarms Mark X which is missing the blade for the rear sight. Does anyone know where I can purchase a replacement? If anyone has an extra laying around you can spare let me know. The grove in the sight base measures approx. .209 inches. This is the narrower portion of the slot in the base. My calipers wouldn't fit in the flared lower portion of the slot in the base. There are no markings on the sight base to identify the manufacturer. Does look similar to a Williams. It's a 458 Win Mag. if that makes any difference. edit: I did some searching on the net and found the manual for the Mark X. It looks like I need part # 1793 called the rear sight.

Thanks,

Pretty sure that is the Williams aluminum rear sight; just buy another one from Brownells.

DPCP Thanks for the help. This part looks like it would work simply by removing the blade from the base and installing it in the base on my rifle. I have no idea which height to buy. I was thinking about the medium height version. What do you think?

Congrats on finding a .458 WIN Mark X.
If you get tired of it, send it to me.
You have 4 rear leaf choices there.
.188" low
.250" low-medium
.313" high-medium
.375" high
Since the .458 WIN does not have the lowest of midrange trajectories, and not the highest, I would go with the .313" height
and hope to have it wind up near the middle of the elevation adjustment.

RIP -Thanks for the info. I have a Ruger RSM 416 Rigby but don't really need two big bores. I'm going to play with the 458 and most likely sell one or the other. All depends upon which rifle I like the best.

Only way to tell is to do one of two things; the best way is to make a rear sight out of modeling clay and stick it on the base. Shoot it and mold until you get it to hit POA. Then measure it. Sights are measured from the bottom of the dovetail.
The other way is to measure the front sight height from the center of the bore, then do the same for the rear base. The difference is the height of rear insert you need, to get parallel sights, which may, or may not, be right.
Another alternative is to buy the highest one and file to regulate.

I thought about that after composing my last post. A buddy is checking on a possible local source for me. If that doesn't work out I'll go with the high one from Brownell's.

If you have your front sight height (above the bore line) then measure the distance between the front and rear sights and use Brownells formula in the book to calculate the rear sight height you need. You will also need to calculate the height of the rear sight base dovetail above bore line.

Thanks for all the help. Does anyone know if these rifles came glass bedded from the factory? I pulled the stock and was surprised to see a nicely done bedding job. Just wondering if this is factory or aftermarket. Either way it's a nice job.

You're welcome; I don't know much but I have taken apart a lot of rifles.

That's right, not a factory bedding job, too nice for that.
The factory .458 WIN "Safari-style" Whitworth rifles were crudely glass bedded with two separate blobs of dark grey epoxy, one on the barrel lug and one on the primary action lug.
That is the way I got one once, new in box.

#1 that looks like a Williams to me as well. #2, I have never found an MkX glass bedded @ the factory. I took a lot of them apart as well. The European wood was trash but the actions (Being a 98)were superb. I can only assume that the new import Charles Daly's are from the same mfg. as Interarms used. I.E. the lament of the old gunsmith, 'I sit here doing my trade every day. I am not in sales or politics; just leave me alone + let me work at my trade.'

Never mistake motion for action.

I only ever bought two Whitworths new in box, the .458 WIN was factory bedded with two blobs of epoxy.
The .375 H&H was not.

The .458 WIN action was not opened up, 3.4" box.
The .375 H&H action was opened up, 3.6" box.

They both had the 3-leaf rear sight which I removed and replaced with a fold-down rear so I could use a Lyman or Williams receiver peep.
Or I just left the rear sight off and filled the holes with plug screws,
used the peep only, shot better.

Helpful from Brownells, since all of us who scope a .458 WIN will sooner or later need this:

I ordered the new sight blade from Williams. It arrived yesterday and was a 5 minute install. The new blades won't fit the old sight slide that I have on my rifle and is shown in the picture above. You need to get a new sight slide as well.

Now here's the interesting part. The Williams website states that all new sight blades come with a new slide but when I called to place my order their tech guy told me the slides didn't come with the blade. I told him about their website information and he said it was wrong but agreed to include a free slide with my order. Just a heads up in case anyone needs to buy a new blade.

Thanks,

I may be able to help you, I am taking a 7mm rem mag Interarms Mark X to my Gunsmith tomorrow to be rebarreled to 358 Norma mag. If he can not reuse the sights on the new barrel then I would be willing to ship them to you, if you pay the shipping.

Thanks for the offer but I'm all set with the new slide and sight blade that I bought from Williams. I just had to remove the old slide and install the new parts. Only took a few minutes. You should be able to install the old sights on your new barrel. The base is held on with two screws. Of course your smith will have to drill and tap two holes in your barrel.

You are going to discover that the theoretical "Parallel to the bore" sight line does not work, particularly with a 458. Your bullet impact will be circa 12" low at 100. Ask me how I know that. Back to high school physics class, the bullet drops same as if it were not doing 2000 fps. This is offset to some degree by muzzle rise but obviously not enough.
