a customer of mine wants to build a rifle on the 30-378 weatherby. he wants to use a remington 700 action in only a single shot mode. it looks like it could work by using a sako extractor. i did a search and found dan lilja isn't real keen on this idea. anyone else done this and how did it turn out

They handle the RUM calibers quite well,..I don't see what the problem would be,..but I'm not a gunsmith.

I believe that the difference is in the case head size on the .30-.378. In requires too much 'meat' to be taken from the bolt head.

I own a 30-378 and wish I new the 300 rum was around the corner. From what people are posting the rum is equalling my velocity. AND I believe it is more likely a MORE ACCURATE round than the 30-378. There isn't a doubt in my mind if I was building a "custom" it would be the 300 rum.
PS--unless you would be freeboring that 30-378 loading data out there might be kinda useless (and dangerous) too.

badboyz,...that makes a lot of sense. I remember toying with the idea of building the 30-378 on my 700action,..but opted for the 300RUM instead. I do not regret that choice one bit [Smile]

Here's the link if you want to click on the pic to see it in the original larger size.

My smith, Dave Caboth at Nitro Gun Works (907-376-5261) will tell you what he knows about doing them on the 700 action. Dave will be back from Buff hunting in Australia after the 17th Sept.

This is a pic of the bolt off the 700 he just finished for my wife. It goes in my wifes 30/338 Lapua Imp bench gun.

Lots of research done on this subject and lots of emails etc from guys that have them with this size boltface (378wby, 338 Lapua), still never seen or heard of a single instance where there was a problem resulting from doing them on a 700 or a M70 action, and I've looked and asked everywhere too. All positive responses from satisfied customers, and never a single regret from any gunsmith that's ever does them.

Most have said about 32" 1.25" dia straight taper to .800" - .900" is all the more they'd go with for weight hanging off one.

The one I have here is 30" 1.35" straight to the muzzle but, a bbl block is what I decided on for it.

My brothers 700 338/378wby is a 32" Pacnor HV taper with a Holland brake.

Here's a pic of his rifle.

HM2, the biggest problem you will run into with a 30-378 WBY on a Rem 700 is the bolt face turned to accomadate the large base of the WBY case is that it leaves the ring so thin on the Rem bolt. If you should ever drop it and it hits something hard it will bend the bolt ring and in the field that could be criticle or even life threatening depending on the situation. Talk your customer into a 300 RUM. He will get about the same results and not the risk of bending the weak bolt ring if he drops the bolt.

I doubt it would bend the ring at all if I dropped this one here on the concrete floor of mine from the 14' ceiling, over and over, even if it impacted near the edge of the extractor cutout. It would be more likely that the bolt handle would get knocked off, IMHO. The bolt face is .590" on this and is .700" in dia. There is a .055" thick ring around the thing and is really quite freakin stout. Having a lefty shoot my right handed rifle and having a casehead or primer let go and "possibly" sending a Sako extractor in pieces through his gourd is all that concerns me, but it ought to everone that has a Sako extractor installed on one too, regaurdless of the case being used.

A 300 Ultra isn't that far from a 30/378wby, but with longer barrels, the two part ways more and more. That's enough for many. The 338/378wby is the same way too. Why not a 300 WM, it's as close to the 300 Ultra as the Ultra is to the 30/378wby? Mo power, mo better, and the need for speed. [Big Grin]
