I picked up an old used pair of low height Sako brand ringmounts for a L579 I am fixing up. The original screws are all buggared up so I am going to replace them with Torx head screws. Got the screws in the mail today from Brownells but noticed the original screws are flat on the bottom of the screwheads while the replacement screws have a tapered bottom. The thread is correct. Are these the correct screws or did I get the wrong ones?

Most holes are a bit tapered and pointed at the bottom. This is from the drill bit shape.

quote:I suspect they are Weaver screws, which have the "semi-countersunk" profile. Weaver screws come in the same thread sizes as many others, only the head configuration varies slightly as you noticed. IMHO, the replacement screws should be flat underneath like the originals.

I double checked the stock numbers on the package with the screws Brownells sent me and they are correct...080-924-464... The rings do have a taper in the bottom of the screw pockets. Though I'm not certain that the taper of the screw matches that of the pocket. Just not sure that I won't strip out the top of the thread in the rings if the screw taper is too narrow or they won't hold well because the screwheads somehow lack adequate contact... I'm probably making a mountain out of a molehill. Thanks for the replies so far.

I'm not familiar with Sako ring mounts, but with a tapered counterbore in the ring, it sounds like the screws may be correct after all. As long as the screw fits the work solidly, it's able to do it's job. Odd, though, were the screws you took out original? Seems not . . .
