Hog Rifle Recommendations
I am going to have a new hog rifle built and I need some advice. I would like to have the rifle silenced, semi-auto, caliber larger than .22 and easy to mount accessories like laser lights and night vision scope. Was thinking about an AR platform.

I have used a friends silenced 358win and the cartridge was very effective. However it was bolt action and you have to handload for it.

AR in .300 Whisper (or wait for the .300 Blackout). Subsonic & factory ammo is available from Cor-Bon. Feeds in regular AR mags, etc.

Plain old AR15 type 223s have taken as many hogs as everything else in total on our Tx lease.

As usual just my $.02

I didn't think you could really silence anything faster than the speed of sound. The 358 win isn't a super pooper by any stretch, but is faster than the speed of sound by well over 1000fps, even with 250 grain bullets.

FISH!!

Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

When it comes to "Hollywood" quiet you are correct. Breaking the speed of sound leaves you with usually a crack sound as the bullet moves through the air. However, some top end suppressor manufactures such as Gemtech and SWR still get pretty quiet. Plenty quiet not to disturb neighbors if you have any near by.

Can't believe no one has suggested it yet-USE A KNIFE! no sounds at all to supress. The dogs will be making quite a racket, but you won't have to worry about hiding the muzzle noise.

If you build a AR based rifle regardless of caliber get a front gas block that you can turn off the gas. With a high end suppressor and a semi-auto firearm a lot of the pop you hear is sound coming out of the ejection port. The direct gas system of the AR only makes this worse. Turning off the gas with a lever flip will make it a single shot, but it will make it really quiet and limit the amount of carbon build up in the action. If you need a semi-auto just turn it back on. For reliable ejection it also helps if you can tune the amount of gas reaching the bolt as suppressors increase the back pressure.

There are several CIII boards (US bases) like accuratereloading.com that are great places for suppressor info. If you want their address PM me and I will give them to you as I don't know if it is okay to post links to other boards here.

You can load 150gr to 240gr. Powerful enough to take whitetail, cheap enough to load quantity for killing lots of hogs.

I would look at the 7mm-08, .308, or .338 Federal.
Look at the Quicksilver titanium moderators too

I have a 300 Whisper and several 6.8s.

Handloading or more specifically case formation for the Whisper is interesting. You'll virtually have to build your own Whisper to get one built with the best components including a three position gas block (Super sonic, sub sonic, and shut off). Is accurate and fun. With a can it is quite quiet running subsonic.

If you're going to run supersonic the 6.8 with 100 gr Accubonds, 100 gr TTSXs, or 110 gr Sierra Prohunters do well with hogs.

I shoot several suppressed firearms, including 3 on the AR-15, 300 whisper, 223 rem and 458 socom. The only one with a gas valve to shut off is the 300 whisper. The velocity jumps up about 50 fps with the gas shut off though. Mine leaks enough to make the bolt cycle a bit, but it is less noisy.
