Savage 99 Price Check...

I spotted a Savage 99F in the gunshop today that I could be interested in. The price seemed fair, but I'm not sure what the market is on these. If you'll fight your way through my description of the condition I am hoping someone can tell me what it ought to have for a price tag.

Everything involved in the function of the gun appears very good. Bore is good, action operates smoothly and without "slop", etc. There have not been any additional holes drilled, it has the brass cartridge counter, and lever safety. The rear sight has been removed, but the front sight is in place, and it has been equipped with a 4x fixed Hurricane scope in Beuhler 1 piece mounts. The receiver has some VERY MINOR pitting. It has the Schnabel forend. There is an area about 1/2" square on one of the panels where the checkering points have broken off and there is a pretty nasty gouge as well. I believe that at least the forend has been refinished, as there is varnish in the gouge. The refinish job looks like the factory finish. The butt stock is in good condition with only one small scratch that I would consider a little worse than "normal". The steel butt plate is in place. There's not much case color left on the lever.

I can't think of anything else to tell. If there is anything else that would help establish the value, ask away. I won't say what was on the price tag. I'll wait 'til there are a few responses so it doesn't influence estimates.

Thanks in advance,
Bob

Apparantly this is an older 99F, keep in mind that there were a number of Savage 99F's made over the years...Would need to know the caliber and any other markings, but the Schenable is a clue that its an older gun..is it checkered both on the butt stock and forend, what kind of a release does the forend have?

A 99F made in the 50-60's is worth $350 to $395 in 308, 243, considerably more in 358 and a whole lot more in .284...

The early guns in 99F are very dependant on condition, and which model of F....

Thanks for the quick response. I can't believe I forgot the caliber!!! It's a .300 Savage. And I have to admit my ignorance... I thought that the Schnabel forearm was indicative of an F, but since I posted the original question I've looked around a little bit and realize that's not the case. So I would have to double check the model. It wasn't actually advertised as an F, I made a poor assumption.

There is checkering on both the forearm and pistol grip. I did not notice the type of forearm release. The serial number indicates that it is an early 50's gun. What other markings would be important to determining value? I plan to go back and take another look tomorrow.

Thanks again,
Bob

Any more than $300 bucks for the gun (not sure of the scope value) and you should shop elsewhere. They are commonly available in .300 Savage in much better condition for $375 to $400.

PS: for an expert opinion, go to www.24hourcampfire.com to the Savage board which is the official Savage collectors sight. Someone there should be able to tell you chapter and verse if you have the serial #.

You should be able to choose what '99 300 savage you want for $300 to $350. There are boatloads of them around for that price range. I paid $325 for mine and it is in beautifull condition.

I own (2) pre-war 99-EGs in 300 savage caliber that are in very good condition. My oldest one, made in 1936 I bought for $306....a steel in its near mint condition. My second one, made in 1941 I bought for $350.

Over the past year I have seen prices start to rise. A lot of "junk" 99s are being listed at $400+. The web site mentioned by Gatogordo
is a great one for info on these guns. That site made me go out and buy my own!

Without inspection, I'm going to say that you are looking at a Sav. M-99 EG, and in the description I'd venture about $300 or less...

I will say that these Savages have made a big jump in value over the last couple of months and the same gun in mint condition is being listed in the gunlist from $500 to as much as $900, thats quite a gap, but things will probably settle to about $600 for a mint gun....

I bought seveal like you describe, only last year, for $175, $190 and another for $225, all at least 80 percent..

I noticed a clean 250-3000 M-99EG in the gunlist this week for about $600 and thats a deal and a half....

Thanks for all the responses and information. I went back today and it is in fact a 99EG. I'll now say that the gun shop has $350 on the price tag. From everyone's input it sounds like the thing to do is hold out for another one. I just thought I would jump on it if it was an exceptional deal.

Thanks for the help,
Bob

I'd offer him $275 and split the difference with him if he wouldn't do that...It sounds like a good shooter and probably bring $300 tops..but I'm bettng he would take $285 or somewhere in that ballpark and thats a good deal, but only if you like the gun.

I like Ray's advise, split the difference with him. There were a bunch of the 99's made in 300 Savage.
