I have seen a similar button on a reproduction shroud in the past and it was actually the release for the shroud so you can take it off. Most of the time this is locatred under the shoud, but evidentally the side can happen too.

I could be wrong, but I beleive that this is Prechtl Magnum Mauser action made in Germany. Prechtl has a patented safety lockdown switch for their three position model 70 type safety (They offer "standar model 70 type safeties and original mauser safeties as well). When the switch is engaged the safety lever can't be moved. Very thoughtful in todays letigious environement. (http://www.golmatic.de)

They offer this safety for wichester model 70's and remington 700's as well. I wouldn't want one, but I don't think it's a bad thing.

Has anyone ever handled one of WAFFEN PRECHTL BIRKENAU's rifles or actions. They look fabulous. I am trying to e-mail them but no luck it keeps bouncing back.

Take a look!

As noted above, it's a safety lock. A really, really bad idea on a dangerous game rifle. It might have some utility on a kid's first rifle.

A safety for a safety? seems a bit much.

Forrest is right. It's cumbersom even for non-dangerous game hunting IMO. I had such a safety on a 375H&H, and exchanged it for a 2 position safety instead. It's now either on or off. No "inbetween", and no stupid extra "safety, safety lock"!

Prechtl does make lots of other good stuff though.
