there still are some of us folks who live in remote places that actually have to - or prefer to - fix things ourselves. This type of work isn't going to get anyone inducted into the custom gun guild hall of fame but it looks like a functional adaption to me. If the guy were just doing it to his own junk then it'd just get a passing laugh, but he's got a shingle outside saying he repairs guns. I don't think that is a good thing or fair to anybody. I understand doing things yourself, I'm that kinda guy too, but there is a point at which you should either pay to have it done right or don't do it at all. My biggest problem with this particular work is that the safety was left original, and in my experience you have to change out the safety if you really want full function AND the use of a scope. Me too. And re membership in the ACGG, my nearest Guild member can best be described as an expert polisher of turds. I used him for 2 jobs and both were FUBARed. OTOH some of the very finest smiths I know are also Guild members, so IMO each client should judge each smith on the merits of the previously-accomplished work and not just on any membership criteria. I posted it because I thought that is was good for a laugh, and I did not recall seeing it here on this forum(has it been posted here before?). BTW, no one is kicking "the poor SOB in his ass once again for being such a rube and daring to befoul his own property". He is free to do whatever he wants with his property. Notice that no one has said anything about it being wrong to "deface" this valuable action. AFAICT, most of us(those of us who are not wound too tight) are laughing at the fact that this guy not only came up with a notable jury rig, but also was so proud of his work that he posted a tutorial for others. Seriously, most of my stuff is garbage compared to what is posted on this forum. And quite a bit of my stuff was devalued by my own hands, but I like to tinker. Phil I have great respect for you for a number of reasons, so I'm not looking to argue with you, but I think that you have twisted things a bit. I have no problem with anyone doing whatever they need to do to make things work, but it seems like the guy who posted the tutorial is offering it as a viable alternative to welding on a new handle. You guys are always tough on Steve. He is creative and frugal. Would I follow his lead on that or some of his other things, not a chance, but to each his own. He took it on as a challenge, he has a well fitted shop with all of the tools to bend or weld a bolt handle. He is self deprecating, as you will see on his building a Mauser Match Rifle link shows “hogged out the barrel channel with a chain saw, and inletted the action with a Swiss Army knife”. By the way, that bolt handle is interesting as well. His machining skills are very good/excellent, he is old school, why buy it when I can build it. His rifles aren’t the prettiest but they function and are quite accurate. That’s the way he wants to do it. I was going to mention that there is a lot of interesting stuff on his website. I am impressed with some of the neat ideas he has posted. I just thought the bolt handle tutorial was funny. I sure as hell was not taking a shot at the guy(as tin can suggests). It is pretty clear that he is capable of doing things correctly.
