Question on Tang Safeties....

I confess that I really miss the safety on the old issue SLR's ( Brit version of the FN FAL). It was right under the thumb on the pistol grip and worked a treat...

Conversly, I find the typical position on most bolt guns a bit strange and out of the way...The exception to this would be a tang safety as found on the old Ruger M77 mk1s..

So, my question, can a K98 or one of its modern clones be modified to a tang safety and is this desireable/feasable??
Can you get a 3 position tang safety to duplicate the function of the M70 safety?

Finally, if a tang safety conversion is not feasable, how difficult would it be to convert a M77 mk1 action to CRF? would it be a case of just swappimg the bolt from a modern Mk2 which already has crf??

Thanks

Pete

I suppose you could make a tang safety for a 98, but it would only block the trigger, not the firing pin, and would weaken the wrist of the stock due to the cutout needed for the linkage rod.
controled feed on the m77 would require considerable modification and $ for the time it would take.

Tang safeties used to be a not-uncommon feature on customized 98's. They are infrequently seen today because of the issue raised above - they don't block the striker. As well, they don't have some of the other benefits of the 3-position safety.

I sure like the look of a trim little 98 with the tang safety, but they carry an unfortunate mechanical disadvantage.
