I took my new 308 apart to clean it well since season is over. I wanted to wipe the bottom down good and put a coat of rust preventive on. I started to put it back together and was having a hard time getting the action and barrel to settle back in the stock. Let me tell you first it is the Synthetic All weather stainless steele model. The barrel part went ok but from there back did not want to go in easy. I did not want to force it in. Just didn't make since to me to force it into a bind. Anyway I kept working with it and gently would squeeze it down until it seemed in and I tightened down the screws. Just hand snug. I was wiping the bolt down before replacing it and then when I picked up the rifle something did not feel right. I looked closely and the stock on both sides in the exact area where the front mounting screw(diagonal one) is had developed a couple waves in it. I thought something had it bound bad, so quickly pulled it back out. Can't figure out what it could be. I let it set for awhile and the stock seemed to straighten up some. The still is a slight depression on each side. Well I carefully tried to reasemble it again and pretty much followed suit with earlier. I had to get the rear screw going to pull the action in. I snugged it all down and it doesn't seem to have yet waved the stock again, but still when you rub down the stock you can feel the depression where the waves were. What is up with this? What can you all do to ease my mind here? thanks

I can't say that I've ever seen that problem with that particular stock, but, if it were mine, it would be waving goodbye. Big Grin

I'll take a stab at it. My guess would be that the magazine box is not seated correctly. Make sure that it is fully seated into the recess in the bottom of the action, front & back and along both sides. That's the only thing I can see that would cause the problem you describe.

Like Mark I often had trouble getting the magazine box to set correctly. Mine was a blind box and I would have to stick my fingers in through the action and old the box in place as I put the aciton into the stock.

As usual just my $.02

Whitey,
As much as I hate to say it, if Ruger put it together, well you know.....
Make sure the magazine box is all the way up into the action and not up side down, it should go back together then. A thought just came to me....If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I have several Rugers and haven't had this much trouble with them ever. As mentioned above it's possible the mag box got flipped over or isn't seated correctly. A couple of mine are bedded tight and they don't have to be pulled in with the screws. As a side note, once the front screw is tight, the back should just be snug enough to keep them in place.

As for the flaming and get rid of it advice, tell them to piss off! Big Grin

My Ruger M77 in .338 WM outshot my brother-in-laws Rem 700 BDL in .22-250 consistantly. His BDL was stolen, best thing that came of it was the Ruger he replaced it with! jumping Nate

Hello the campfire
I had the same roblem last night with my son's SS Ruger 77 left hand 30-06. It took sneaking up on tight to get the botom metal and mag. box to fit together propery. The first couple of times the floor plate would look like it was in , but would not open even though the latch was not all of the way locked. I had to tighten the screws in rotation, a little bit at a time and kinda jiggle it to get it all in place.
It shots great though so its worth the trouble.
Merry HO HO HO and all that.

Is it safe to let for a 58 year old man run around in the woods unsupervised with a high powered rifle?
