Typical barrel, 338 caliber 1 in 10 CM non-fluted, they ought to have them on the shelf! Only $280.00 which is not a lot more than Shilen or Lilja.

4 months! Frowner

Cut rifled cryogenic treating would be nice, but with the gunsmithing, setup and finding a load time it will be close to or past the Elk season. Was looking forward to a 338 RUM for that hunt.

I would pass on the cyrogenic treatment myself. Instead, tip your gunsmith, maybe he will turn it around quickly for you. Big Grin But what do I know.

If nobody wanted them, they would be on the shelf. I think to be safe on a rebarrel you need to plan a year in advance.

I've waited 4 months for one. I try to buy my components at least a year in advance that way I can get them to my gunsmith with 8 months left before I need it.

Sometimes they even get done by then.

My CM Lilja will be going on 5 months starting next week. I would have liked to have had it earlier, but shit happens.

Worth waiting 4 months? Not to me, no way no how, but that's me. I don't shoot well enough to know the difference between Krieger and the Douglas I can get in less than a month, and I doubt most people do.

I have a Krieger cut rifled barrel on a pre-64 M70 in .338 Win Mag. Is one of those foul weather rifles in Gun Kote on a McMillan stock. It shoots 2" at 300 yards with 225 Barnes X bullets.

It just works!

Worth waiting 4 months for? I would.

THis is exactly like asking us which girl you should take to the prom. The right answer is the one YOU like.

If you are contemplating waiting extra time for a Kreiger in the belief that it is somehow superior to other barrel brands, then don't wait a day on it. It is not. They are great barrels and I have several. There are other equally great barrels out there. The Kreiger will not do anything for you that a Shilen or Lilja will not do for you.

Why do I soemtiems buy a Kreiger and soemtimes buy soemthing different? The same reason I drink a certain single malt on a day and a different single malt on a different day-it all depends on what mood I am in. The barrels are equally good and the Scotches are equally good-they are just different.

Camp Perry National Matches will be taking place in a couple months, all manner of firearms there, barrel mfg.'s, levels of shooters, etc., but the one thing you will probably find the most prevalent on the firing line will be Krieger barrels for those experienced shooters whether they be Service Rifle shooters or Match Rifle shooters. Certainly there will be other makers there and they do fine, but Krieger pretty well dominates the scene and has for several years now. Can assure you that all of us using the Krieger barrels waited and paid premium for them and it will be hard to find someone critical of the Krieger barrel. Usually the trigger puller that is the problem.

About 10 years ago I was still able to shoot in competition an dkept up with what was going on in the precision shooting world. Benchresters generally shot button rifled barrels and Hi Power shooters generally shot cut rifled barrels. Both kinds of barrels could win any of the matches being shot each week.

Shooters form cliques just like every other group of humans. It is very easy to see this on the variuous internet forums we now have at our finger tips. I post on this site regularly and 2 more sites very infrequently. I visit many other sites each day and never post, but rather just read and learn.

I am always studying human behavior, looking for trends that would helpo me understand folks. A glaring trend is how cliqueish and committed each site is to various things. On machining Forum A, folks will tell you Brand X is the cat's meow and Brand Y is total junk. Click on machining Forum B and they will give you valid reasons and examples showing how Brand Y is the best and Brand X is total junk.

You can find examples of this in every possible topic. Hell, even the porn sites are like that-some say girls rock and others swear that naked guys are awesome. I have been spending a lot of time on the latter lately. Oh wait, did I just say that outloud? rotflmo But seriously, this focusing on one brand/item and swearing off all others is a human behavior pattern that is easy to see now that we have the entire world at our finger tips. There are valid and useful reasons for this pattern of behaviour, but that is a thread for a psychology forum.

Take a look at Brux barrels. Rifled on the same P&W machinery Krieger has and from what I've seen of their barrels they shoot very well. Wait time on them is quoted at less than a month. I've only used one of their barrels on a .223 on a Savage action and it's a shooter. I'll be buying more from them. The use Crucible steel that is double stress relieved at the foundry (just like all the others). I don't think they Cryo their stuff, but I was impressed with the barrel I got from them. I also swung by their shop two weeks ago to visit and ask about a special barrel I had ordered. The two guys that run the shop were pretty dedicated to turning out a superior product and very decent folks.

Shoot straight, shoot often.

If the Krieger barrel is what you want and are set on it then yes, it's worth waiting for. However, if hunting with that new custom rifle this year is more important then maybe consider a Shilen. I've hunted with a lot of Shilens and never missed an animal due to the barrel.

My preference for barrels goes to Broughton. They shoot as well or better than anything else I've used, and the delivery time has been good. Although he only does stainless steel and nothing lighter than a #3 contour. I really like the 5C rifleing as it fouls very little, cleans up fast and breaks in very quickley. I also have no problem with Krieger or Lilja either as I use a fair number of those barrels as well.

Yes it's cocked, and it has bullets too!!!

Bruno did not have one on the shelf, they would have to order one from Krieger.

How about a Bartlein?

Gain 4 to 6 weeks.

Just an observation, the people who say that it is worth waiting for are the people who already own Kriegers.

I'm not a barrel snob, I own Krieger, Shilen, PacNor but the most barrels that I buy are Savage take offs.

I don't need a barrel that shoots in the 1s or 2s for ground squirrels out to 300 yards, groups in the 3s, 4s and 5s work fine

Okay this is the way I am going on this one:

1. I am not looking for a benchrest gun just an accurate hunting rifle
2. I do want to try a hand lapped cut rifled barrel
3. My gunsmith says he could make a piece of PVC pipe shoot in the 2's Big Grin
4. I can minimize my tip for expedited services hillbilly with a more easily obtainable barrel
5. I am all for helping an American entrepreneur company
6. I would appreciate a barrel that is one of a few that will probably receive extra attention rather than one of hundreds

So I am going to go with the Brux barrel (thank you matt salm) and cancel at Krieger.

So full speed ahead.
