Rebarrelling a win 100

A friend brought a win model 100 in a while ago to see if I could get it shooting again. Cases were sticking and not extracting. Well after dinking around with it some, replaced the extractor and scrubbed the chamber, still no-go... Cases just stuck in the bore then extracted when cycling by hand again. I had read where even some experts (not me!) would run into one here and there that just would never work.... Well I started looking in my pile of used barrels and a had a like new take-off Winchester push feed featherweight barrel I had bought years ago for $40 for some damned reason. Looking at it and measuring the contours they are the same contour to a tee.... I called my buddy to see if he'd like me to try and swap them over depending on tenon and he said go for it.

Well, the barrel tenon's are the same, headspace is a little different so I chucked the barrel up and set the shoulder back enough to time the roll marks on the bottom and machined the breech to match the old barrel and reamed to proper headspace. Installed the barrel, destroyed the old barrel getting the gas block off and dovetailed it into the new barrel. The originals are sweated in the dovetails but I got a very tight fit between and didn't think it would be necessary. Got everything fit together and assembled today along with drilling the gas port and the durned thing cycled perfectly.

I have read it was a factory only deal for, repair and they would just send you a new receiver, or it was just too involved but for anyone curious, it certainly can be done!

Here's the take-off model 100 barrel next to a Winchester push feed 70 fthwt 7-08 barrel. Same threads, same contour.

Yes the M88 and M100 use 1" x 16tpi threads. Just a different shape of breech due to the shape of the extractor hook that you would think of.

The one thing is the factory never sold just the barrel only. This is due to the fact that these models were the first ones that the receiver threads were not timed.

So who did it first Savage with the 110, or Winchester with the M88. Just make the receiver, screw the barrel in, check headspace, and roll mark the barrel.

Have rebarreled my share of M88's in years past but only a few M100's. The gas block is silver brazed in place. take care in getting the distance, and centerline the same as the old barrel.
