I usually just read about Tru-Oil on here. Has anyone used the Classic Gunstock Finish by Pilkington?

Yes, I have. With good success also. It is very costly for what you're getting however. Pilkington's finish is a Linseed/Spar Varnish mixture. He gave us the formula when we attended his class in 1983.

There are several products on the market that can be bought in bulk very reasonably. They are typically a Linseed/Spar Varnish mix or a Tung Oil/Urethane mix.

Most work well with some combination of diluting a bit with Mineral Spirits.......soak, wipe, let dry......then wet sand with the mixture using successively finer grades of paper.

I'm currently using Deft Danish Oil......which is a Tung Oil/Uretane mixture.

My gunbuilder uses it almost exclusively. He used it on the Whelen he did for me and it is beautiful. So, I can attest to the results but have no experience as to how it is to work with.
