I know that a 280rem can't be rechambered into a 7mm-08 without setting the barrel back a looong way. But can a 7mm-08 be re-cut to a 280Rem? I can see the taper of the case as a problem, and if there is a problem with the taper, anyone have any idea how far the barrel would need to be set back to get a smooth chamber?

Just came to mind, would making a 280AI completely remove the 7mm-08 chamber?

thanks,
irwin

The 280 reamer will completely clean up the 7-08 chamber.
Be careful, though, 280 is designed for a long action gun, and the 7-08 is a short action caliber.
Chances are your gun is short action, so this may not work.

Be aware also that by lengthing the chamber
you may be cutting the chamber into a section
of the barrel that may be too thin. Measure
the diameter of the barrel where the new chamber will end and then ask a COMPETENT gunsmith his opinion. You may want to ask

It certainly can be done, but as Old Elk said, the barrel diameter where the chamber shoulder would end up is important. So is the question of whether or not your magazine box is long enough to accept a loaded .280 round and let it feed properly.

Something bothered me about this.....so I drew both cartridges over each other in Auto Cad and here's the result.....since the foreward shoulder diameter of the 7-08 is larger than the .280 one must remove a minimum of .293 from the breechend of the barrel to clean up the entire chamber if rechambering a 7-08 to the .280 Rem. If you go to the .280 AI this is not true.

And of course the short action VS long action issues are still there.....
Usually it's more econimical to trade guns than do this kind of surgery.....but some just want it that way so go for it.

I don't believe an 06 based case will clean up a 308 based case without setback. The AI version should do it fine.

You are correct, an '06 won't clean up .308 chamber. The barrel must first be set back
