Am thinking about getting a custom rifle built an would like some input as to which would be better a Remington 700 action which I have or just work a couple more months of OT and go all out with a custom action.

Will be building a .308 win & the rifle I was gonna have torn apart is a model 700 BDL-DM SS.

PA,

It would be helpful to know what the intended use or uses would be for this rifle.
And maybe a budget.

If you're going to hunt with it, I'd go with your M700. Moving up to a custom is nice, but are you going to be able to fully exploit that last tiny bit of accuracy, under field conditions? I have some "custom" deals built on M700 actions, that are hunting guns. Off of a bench, or even prone off of my ruck, they'll all go sub-1/2 MOA. But, while hunting, I find it hard to get myself up to that standard under true hunting conditions.

PA,

This is a situation that makes most of us drool, getting to plan a dream rifle and not having to pay for it!

Wood or fiberglass, barrel length, heavy or light, scope and/or iron sights?

Currently it is almost as practical to get a good custom action as it is to re-do a
Remington to higher accuracy standards. Don't take me wrong, I use a lot of Remingtons for accurate rifles, but after much work and money. I have found it more expedient to use a "custom" action as opposed to the Remington simply because there is less work to do and therefore they take less time. On the other hand there are many, many options available for the Remingtons and several different stock designs available both in fiberglass and wood, less so for the "customs".

Let's hear some more ideas and see where this can go!

PA_Hunter....I have two rifles built on the McMillan custom action...basically a custom Rem 700 clone with all the goodies. Another option is the new action by Ed Brown of 1911 .45acp fame which is a combo of the Rem 700 and Win 70 and a bit less expensive than the McMillan....both of these guys are on the web. You will spend $1000 for the Brown and a little more for the McMillan.

Being in PA you might check out the new action by Gunmaker Jim Borden of benchrest fame....he makes beautiful rifles and his actions are A-1...also on the web.

Go to www.benchrest.com and check out the vendor section on the left of the main page.

WELL''

The actions Jim borden makes are made by Nesika Bay, they are also on the internet. Nesika has a nice hunter action too. Jim Broden and Kenny Jarrett, Callum Ferguson are all wannabes who claim it's their action. Nesika maks them and are cheaper than the other retailers.

If you want the ultimate custom rifle, use a custom action, such as a Nesika, if you are looking for a rifle that is a cut above factory stuff, a custom rifle built on a reworked 700 Rem, or M70 Win CF, will do all the hunting a person can do in a lifetime. The biggest plus of a Nesika as a custom actions is all of the options that they offer. www.duanesguns.com

If you mean a "Custom Rifle" wood stock and all the trimmings, do not go with a Rem action..You will devalue the gun by a bunch...use a M-70 pre 64 or a 98 Mauser....

If your calling a custom rifle a Plastic stocked, custom barrel job then the 700's fine....

Trust me, this is good advise for your pocket book if you ever want to sell the rifle.
