I am going to buy a new rifle, and never have owned a new Win, I thought i might get the Pro's and Con's between the Rem700 and Win 70. Any thought's please? Thanks Len

I would opt for the M70 as I like control round feed rifles. So for me it's CZ's, mausers and M70's. I do own a rem 700 but it's in a 22/250.

Pro for Winchester - CRF, great trigger, 3 Pos safety, no stupid J lock. Con for Remington - Push feed, dodgy trigger/safety, stupid J lock.

I own several model 70 classic rifles as well as 3 model 700s. Hands down the 700s are more accurate than my model 70s.But teh model 70s (that I've kept) are accurate enough for hunting. I do not understand the comment that the 700s have a bad trigger. All of mine use the factory safety/trigger combo and all have been adjusted to 3 pounds. They feel very crisp and work just fine. They feel no different to me than the triggers on my model 70s. I do prefer the 3 position safety on the model 70s because they lock the bolt. I also dislike the "J" lock but you can simply ignore it.....or better yet buy an older M700 with out the damb thing. For all of my hunting here in North America I see no real agvantage to CRF vs. Push Feed. The only time I see CRF being more desirable is if hunting Dangerous game. But a Brown Bear hunt is out of my price range. I also like the simplicity of the push feed actions. Bottom line, either will work as well as the other. Get the one that feels best for you. I own both, and like them both but, I won`t buy a gun that comes with a key............M70 if you buy new. [ 12-07-2003, 20:08: Message edited by: Ol` Joe ]

I've owned more than a few of each. I prefer the Model 70....... AD

I've owned 10 model 70s and about that many Rem 700s and for varmint and target work I like the Remingtons.....for hunting the Winchesters get the nod. Winchesters just look nicer, function smoother and have the 3-position safety that I like.

If nothing else the model 70 looks better. But that is just a good start. Chuck

I own both, but prefer the Remington. I guess I'm the odd one out, but I don't like the three position safety. I've always felt that they come off loudly. As for the J lock, leave your rifle unlocked and there isn't a problem. I've adjusted all my Remington triggers to 2.5 pounds without too much fanfare. For non dangerous game I don't see a need for controlled feed rounds. It comes down to the "Ford vs. Chevy" thoughts. Each will like something different from the the next guy. Bob257
