I have a spare Remington 700 long action laying around and want to have a rifle built on this action. That is of course if the action checks out ok. I want to use the rifle mainly for paper punching and maybe some big game hunting (deer mostly) Any opinions on a caliber would be welcome.

Belted magnum bolt face, then one of the Mags (338 does pretty well with Lee cast gas checked bullet at 33 Winchester velocities), or replace and use anything with the 7X57 diameter.

Boring, but the 06 comes to mind first.
This choice followed by say 280.

To bad it is not a medium length, then you could just go to 7-08 or 308 maybe even 260 and be done with it.
