Hey guys,

On an older marlin 357 lever gun, I’m not sure the year but it’s at least 40 years old, on the left side of the gun it’s missing a screw. Not sure what the screw is for but it’s the largest one on that side of the action. This is not my gun, it was my stepdad‘s my mom brought it over the other day to me to clean and check it. He passed away so I can’t ask him what it was for either. I’m sure one of you genius smiths will know and can tell me where to find a replacement

Thanks gents

Sounds like a trigger plate screw that secures the trigger plate to the receiver. Most Marlin parts are out of stock currently. Maybe someone has one in their shop. I will check Wednesday when I get back.

On many Marlin lever rifles there are two peep sight dummy screws on the left side of the action. I wonder if one of them is missing? If so, they wont affect the function of the gun.

I’ll get a picture of it this weekend so I make sure and buy the right replacement. I’m not that familiar with love or guns, it’s pretty low down on the side of the action and pretty big so I don’t know if it ties to the sites or not. But that’s why I came here you guys are experts. I really appreciate the help

Trigger plate support screw; the rifle will work without it, but it keeps the plate from flexing. Numrich is out of them.

Is it a normal size/pitch so that a common screw can be installed until he can find one?
Of course there is nothing more permanent than a temporary fix that works.

No; it is a special head size, but it isn't needed unless he is shooting it constantly. It prevents the bottom plate from flexing, but it is a very stoutly built part.

It hasn’t been shot in a while and won’t be shot again until I fix it. It’s just for fun and not like I have a bunch of 38/357 laying around Big Grin

I can just check back with Numrich from time to time. I thought maybe it was the kind of thing Jim Wisner would have up his sleeve but remembered he was a Winchester guy.

Thanks a lot you guys, good to know what it is and that it isn’t unusable in a pinch
