This might be old, but it's still interesting. Apparently they left the bore sight in. ![]() ![]() ![]() Jerry Huffaker State, National and World Champion Taxidermist

Yes, someone sent those pics to me by e-mail. I was going to post them here but you beat me to it. Those pics look pretty real, but someone would have to be pretty careless not to take the bore sighter out of the barrel. I guess it's a good reminder for all of us: SAFETY FIRST.

Who needs a borescope when you can just do this to see what the inside of your barrel looks like. I find posts like this amusing as well as educational because it always reminds me to double check everything when dealing with a firearm. We can all laugh about it but I am sure we have all been close to screwing up ourselves. Nice post.

Ouch! I'll have to agree with JMJ888 and think it's too easy to boresite by looking through the barrel. gunmaker

Even the sling looks brand-spanking new. I'd say the odds are that this was the first round fired through the rifle. If I ever do something like this, I won't be standing around while someone takes pictures. The only pictures they'll get will be of me peeling out of the parking lot with a my jacket pulled over my head. ![]() ______________________________ "Truth is the daughter of time." I have always said that if you stick things into the muzzle end of your barrel i.e, reamers, bore sighting spuds, etc., sooner or later you will ruin the crown. See...

Doesnt look like those fancy "high tech" boresighters work too good. The good old way of looking down the barrel would have seen something "high tech" lodged in the barrel ![]()

I have always enjoyed the ~6% of my gun collection that is Savage, but I have an anti Savage friend who showed around a Sav110 that blew up and injured someone. He got it from the police who investigated. There was a factory cut in the receiver for the extractor that was too deep and the receiver split. Other 110s I have looked at do not have this problem.

You guys are really missing the point here.... The poor guy just lost a laser boresighter that's worth more than the savage he blew up.......... ![]() But seriously......those boresighters are over $100.00.....damn that sucks. Williams Machine Works ![]()

Well it looks like Savage finally stopped using LaSalle 1144 steel, for their rifle barrels. It appears to be a good steel because you can see the barrel split on the petals of the bore stud. It also did not split to the breech like the older ones would. Dad has one he picked up years ago for Hunter Education. An 110E in 30-06, someone shot it with snow or mud in the muzzle. It split in two through the drilled and tapped blind hole for the front sight, and then all the way to the shoulder in the chamber. Any way I hope no one got hurt shooting this rifle. I thought you take the boresighter out of the barrel when you shoot it. No wonder I cannot get them to work... Shoot was from College Station, TX., no doubt...

That's what you do, with that style of boresighter, you set the cross hairs on the 100 yard mark and without disturbing anything, fire a round and see if the boresighter lands where you think it will. ![]()
If you need a scale, the magnetic boresighter from Leupold works great.

I got this in an e-mail the other day. It didn't say whether the guy was hurt or not either. I would like to think that the only damage done was to the bore sight and his pride. I figure that the rifle is worth more now than it was before the shot. It would make a great lamp for a hunting lodge. Pretty much takes all the guesswork out of the accuracy problem on that one. Here a tip for the shooter. Don't play with daddys rifle, it might go boom and scare the piss out of you. Timan ![]()
