Dakota Arms(part of Rem) is located in a right to work state. Doubt it was a union shop. I wonder what the difference in wages was?

Homestake gold mine was located 15 miles from Dakota arms and went belly up when they couldn't make money at $300/OZ because labor costs were high. Rumor has it that the average miner was making 3X the local average wages.

I'm not bashing unions here, just pointing out the obvious.

South Dakota is one of the cheapest places to run a business. It also has some brutal weather.

Remington employees belong to the The United Mine Workers of America union.

Maybe they are closer to Homestake than I thought.

I am no bankruptcy expert but I believe what ever the union employees are owed is considered debt by the bankruptcy court and it is the judge who will decide which debtors are paid and how much if any they will receive out of the proceeds of Remington's dismemberment and sell off.

Homestake was United Steel Workers not UMW. It shut down due to the costs to mine (not necessarily labor costs) that place was extremely deep and extensive. Do you have any idea how many tons had to be drilled, blasted, hauled, and lifted to surface just to get that 1 ounce ?
Every mine I've worked at had much higher wages than other local jobs. 3x, if true is not out of line in any mining community - union or non union.

I've strayed off the post subject simply to correct misconceptions.

I used to take tours of the Homestake gold mine whenever family or friends would visit. The mine tunnel system is massive and the open cut is really impressive. Don't think I would want to work a mile under ground. The mine closing was kind of hard on Deadwood and Lead South Dakota. I'm sure the same would apply to Ilion, NY as it's a small town as well. Hope Remington and it's employees can recover.

Whatever the outcome it will all come down to management. They get all the blame or all the glory. If they can't make a profit they need to manage it better.

"remington" was dissolved in bankruptcy - the remaining assets were sold to pay off creditors. I feel for the workers(former REMINGTON not Roundhill employees), and their Union should be in consultation with the bankruptcy judge.

Remington has always been a shady outfit, over loaded with lawsuits causing their demise..They were too arrogant to admit the Walker Trigger was the problem, even at the number of deaths it caused..
