Does anyone have a line on a stock for a Remington 30 / 720?

I sent one off to my checkering guy this summer that I put my heart into and he's spaced. I can't get my stock back - week after week told it's going to be mailed anytime. Even told 2 weeks it was in the mail, never showed. I even told him he could keep my money, not finish the stock, and just send it back. Nothing.

So, I've given up and need to start over. It's for my daughter's rifle - a sporterized 1917 Enfield - that we are planning to take to Namibia next summer. The plan was to get some road miles on it this Fall and Spring.

I found a cheap stock Remington 20/720 stock at Richard's Microfit for $55 that I could make a pattern stock and have duplicated. But that will take time and I have to finish it then.

Wondering if anyone has any original factory stocks in great shape?

Thanks!

Years ago I had sent some work out to a now retired gunsmith. Kept getting the run around for 18 months. Eventually he stopped returning calls and emails. I finally sent a registered letter threatening legal action. When that came back unopened I sent it, in it's original envelope, to the local sheriff with full explanation and a copy and asked him to call upon receipt. He agreed to hand deliver the letter and stay while he read it. 5 days later I got my action back. I did loose my deposit.

The Rem 720 (and Model 30) is a sporterized Enfield. Remington had lots of left over parts from WW1 so they made them into sporting rifles.
Original stock? Good Luck.
But for next summer? You can make one in that time. Have Ramrod turn one out for you on your pattern. Plenty of time.
After WW2 they designed the 721 and 722, which is the 700 we know now. So, the stocks are not in any way the same.
If you are in a hurry, I would get a 1917 Enfield stock and glass it in until you can make a real one.
Anyway, what is wrong with these people? Basic courtesy pretty much tells us you can't steal people's money and property. Yes, tell me where he is and if he is close, I will knock on his door.

Was told today it really was in the mail this time and I will have the tracking # tomorrow morning. This is after 4 emails and 3 phone calls over the last week. And remember, it was mailed 9/14 and arrived here 9/20 supposedly.

I will give this one more chance before I enlist the offer for someone to visit him locally.

Based on my experience so far I give this zero % chance of actually happening.

Nothing happening - more promises.

Is there anyone in or near Polson, MT that can try and retrieve my stock? PM if so and I will provide the details.

Thanks!

Sounds to me like he lost it and is stalling for time trying to find it or he screwed it up and is trying to find a new one.

Will do. It's someone that folks recommend frequently. I've done business with the individual 4 times in the past. Great customer service, communication, workmanship, etc.

This time - goose egg.

I'm in the Austin area and have a 30 Express that I bought to take apart and rebuild. It's not being used, so I could part with the stock.

PM me and we can work something out.

Just telling the customer I screwed up.

Goes a long ways.

Like I tell my employees, it's OK to mess up.

With the following corollaries:
1. It's not okay to mess up and say you didn't mess up when you did.
2. You need to learn from your mistake and not repeat.
3. If the mess up was not legal, then you didn't mess up, you broke the law and someone else is going to deal with this besides me.

Looking at a Model 30 stock from a member on Saturday.

I've given up ever getting my stock back from the guy in Montana or getting the truth.

Should I go through small claims court just for the sake of documenting everything so it doesn't happen to anyone else? Could I file in Polson remotely or do I have to do it in person?

Most likely cost you more then the stock was worth to file a court claim.

Just spread the word. the net is a powerful force.

We have Montana members maybe one well step up to the plate and pay him a visit.

Austin I know your pain. A couple years back I had a very forget able incident with a checker in Polsum. He had told me 2 months if I sent my stock quickly. I did. 1 1/2 years later after much communications and lack of communications I finally retained a lawyer in Polsum to file a full law suit (not small claims as he advised against that). The lawyer said he would call me the next day. The lawyer did call and told me the guy would ship the rifle that very day. That did occur and I got my stock back very nicely checkered. You can draw your own conclusions but the call to the lawyer changed the game and I got back what I wanted. That's my story.
FYI I am the person who you mention in your last entry, the one you got a PM about from a friend of mine. I had not seen your entry before I wrote mine. Smiler G Luck

Your best bet is that Model 30 stock.

I had a 720 stock that had been cut/padded, front end clipped for a ebony forend tip, over sanded flattening the checkering most of the way, barrel channel opened up, and a thick shellac applied over all of it. It still sold for nearly $400 on eBay. I thought I'd get $50-65 for it, so someone must think they are special.

Yes, original 720 stocks are quite collectable now and worth a lot. Not many were made.

Finally got the stock, never had time to do the paperwork. It came out really nice.
