When Johnson Automatics lost their military contracts after WWII, they tried unsuccessfully for a few years to stay afloat customizing Mausers and other sporting rifles. Anyone familiar with these? This is one they called their European Sporter: NRA Life Member, Band of Bubbas Charter Member, PGCA, DRSS. Shoot & hunt with vintage classics.

Yeah I have seen one other, I own it. It is a .300 Savage built on a 1948 FN commercial action. It has the same type of receiver sight as is on the pictured rifle and is stamped 'Johnson Automatics' on the barrel. The stock is marked 'Fancy' in the barrel channel and has a good bit of fiddleback in it. It has a deteriorated rubber recoil pad. The front sight has an orange bead insert with an angled mirror at the rear that reflects light upon the bead I guess. It is not d&t for scope mounts. Anyway it is a very nice 50's era classic sporter. I need to find a good stocksmith who can properly install a new recoil pad and refinish the stock. Plateau Hunter

A friend has one built on an FN Deluxe. My rifle was built on a small ring military Mauser action, not D&T, stippled front receiver ring, barreled in 270Win, butterknife bolt handle, steel buttplate and grip cap, Lyman 48-M peep, Lyman banded front sight, semi-fancy stock, ebony tip, only markings Johnson Automatics on top of barrel. I posted up a scan of their complete catalog here a few years ago. I've probably got it somewhere around here - quite an extensive service they were offering.

I have my grandfathers rifle which is a 1917 enfield action he sent to Johnson Automatics to have the ears machined off the action and barreled in .270. They sent the barreled action back to him and he stocked it himself in a Bishop stock. Extremely good barrel, this rifle will shoot extremely well. I'd love to see the post on the catalog

Forrest, Can I come by the house and rumage through your gunsafe one afternoon? After that we'll go check out the wood collection in garage. You've got some wonderful rifles my friend. Terry -------------------------------------------- Well, other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

The catalog I have is dated 1947. I see no reference to anything called a "European Sporter". Here's a couple of pages that have to do with the Mauser conversions, and general gunsmithing.
