I bought a Remington short action .221 Fireball two years ago; I got a little... enthusiastic with the barrel floating. I want to get another stock like what is on the rifle now. The gun is accurate, I just want to have it look a little better.

The stock is walnut, checkered, no fore end tip, thin buttpad, no comb or cheekpiece- what is the model designation of this rifle? I believe it was a "Classic" issued one year.

I'm in NYC, the rifle is in North Carolina.

It appears Remington doesn't make this style of stock anymore, so how to find one? I E-bayed a little and got no where.

Several oiptions if Remington no longer has replacement stocks for the classic
1. glass bed up the old barrel channel and replace the wood you removed. It can actually look pretty good and you will still have the channel free floated if you put several wraps of electrical tape around the barrel before bedding it. The glass can be stained and sanded down and will look fairly good.

2. Get a BDL or CDL stock. The CDL especially is a better looking stock than the classic IMO

3. find a used classic and pirate that stock and sell it with your old stock.

4. there are several custom stockmakers out there......but it's not a cheap way out.

Try Chris Hyde at Vintage Sporting (256) 534-9292...he usually has a large number of take off stocks on hand at reasonable prices.

Actually, I have a brand new CDL stock, delivered today, but I really want one like the original. This is how I found out the difference between "Classics" now, and "Clasics" from a few years ago. I found one, I think, on E-bay that is a take-off that was bedded. How much difficulty do you think I'd have with my barreled receiver in a stock bedded for the same action, but not the original? Maybe just take it down some, open the recoil lug channel, and skim it?

That CDL wasn't cheap**.

I have really long arms, I'm 6'5' tall, a cheekpiece and comb are a nusiance for guys like me, which is why I prefer no comb or cheekpiece. I'll still have the stock lengthened by adding a 1/2 inch spacer and a thick pad to get some LOP.
