Ok guys I need some input. I recently picked up a .308 mauser. I am in the process of refinishing the stock . It is sanded and most of the dents have been steamed out. what is best for the final final a polyurethane coat or some other coating? Thanks

I would use a modified oil finish such as Pro Custom Oil.

I really like the modified oil finishes. A few people turned me on to Daly's products out of Washington. The Benmatte Tung oil, and the Seafin Teak oil is good stuff; both of which are used by a few guys on this forum.

Do a search in this forum for stock finishing by Duane Wiebe & Chic Worthing. Both use Dalys products and you'll get to see two variations on the process.

I'm just finishing one with Benmatte and have found it to be quite easy to work with. Take your time.
