I agree. That top action looks almost perfect for a .250 Savage. A small ring mauser action with model 70 trigger and blackburn guard all in one package. I wonder how much it cost.

that Pete Grisel action is what should have continued. But somehow he got involved with Dakota, and such a fine 98 type product ceased to be. Lets face it,if that action was on offer,at the same price as a D76,which would you buy?

KIM for quality of work i dont think there would be much in it, so it comes back to prefrence of action type ..M 70 with some mauser features or a full blown 98...an easy way to solve this problem is to get one of each regards daniel

Tell you what lets make some more, just like this one, except make the bolt stop with the integral ears like on a Mauser. I really like this grisel action. It's going to be a 7mm-08 21 inch manlicher with integral sights from a peterson barrel blank. I have some wood. but I think I'll look for a really "crappy" stick for it. I'd also like to do a 20-08 improved vartarg freaky super freak. I think I have a rusty old Dakota kurtz or two kicking around here. They are the good old ks' with the full threads in the front ring, before that there new fangled wharr edm lugway that just goes right thru the threads, kuh kuh kuh. UNBELIEVEABEL!! Kuh Kuh Kuh. Dem dare treads don't matter, I read someplace day jus hold dat dare barrel on is all. Fogetaboutit man day dough madda.

For those who would like to know a bit more about that Grisel action, I did a bit of research. For one thing, a Grisel action was used for the first ACGG gun. Pete Grisel was then in Bend, Oregon and he of course made the action and did the metalwork. Duane Weibe made the stock, Terry Wallace did the engraving, and Marvin Huey made the case. A MATCO barrel was chambered in .270 Winchester. (MATCO used to be in the same building that Mark Penrod is in but I don't think they are in business anymore.). The gun was rust blued. The walnut was furnished by Don Allen who was at the time still in Northfield Minnesota. Weibe used a skeleton buttplate and grip cap and an ebony forend tip. Weibe also fitted a quarter rib to the barrel and a hooded front ramp as well. I believe it was raffled off in either 1985 or 1986. the Grisel action was available in three lengths, called intermediate (308), standard 30-06) and short magnum (300 winnie). it was made out of 4142 steel heat treated to Rockwell C 35. It is a small ring style like a Mexican Mauser and the ring has a diameter of 1.3 inches. It also has integral scope bases, a large extended recoil lug, fully machined bottom metal with straddle floorplate, three position model 70 safety WITH gas flange protection, and cartridge guide rails machined like the 03 Springfield. I believe you could get it with a Blackburn adjustable trigger if you wanted it that way. It was available in left hand and the suggested retail price was $1250.00

Thanks wrf that's interesting.I saw a Grisel 270win on one of his m-98 actions on auction arms. Should have bought it the next one I will. Pete's a real wizard,he hired me into Dakota in Feb.1988. I stayed worked there almost 10 years long after the buyout,he gave me the basics on which to build and learn, how to look at a job and take nothing for granted. Working with Pete is a total learning experience,he always seems to have a new trick on doing things. He's doing a seminar in Reno at the guild show this year. Called metalsmithing for stockmaker, stockmakeing for the metalsmith that will be on Monday. That $1250.00 in '85 is probably like $2250.00 in 05. well have good one WRF.

Timan Your story is very interesting as well, and it is extremely interesting that you have taken up making actions. I have a feeling that there are many here who would be interested in seeing more of your work. Have you thought of getting together a website with a bunch of photos, a price list, and all of that good stuff.

WRF, I just really love my job, weather it's makeing actions or complete rifles or barreled actions. The first thing you need in building a rifle is the action,it's the heart of the rifle.I need to get that web site together. The way Satterlee Arms came to be was after dakota and after taconic i was basicly unwilling to do any other type of work and never settled for jobs that did not involve guns and machine tools.I basically am growing Satterlee Arms with word of mouth type marketing. Quality work and happy customers is what has driven it/me to this point a web page would be a good idea at this point. That would be a fun Friday and Saturday night project too, have a good one WR Timan
