I've got a beater VZ 24 that's been sporterized (7X57). Prior to that it had the crest on the front ring ground off. The grind marks aren't very deep, just enough to get rid of the crest itself, but it has me thinking. Is this ever a safety concern? How deep is too deep, or is there a minimum thickness for the front ring that an over-enthusiastic armory grinder might have violated? Also, can this usually be rectified by surface grinding? Thanks in advance.

It only takes me .010" to .015" of grinding to remove crests. This is not enough to cause a problem with safety. John Farner If you haven't, please join the NRA!
