For the gunsmith experts out there. I recently read an article about a Clark Custom barrel sleeve for the mini 14. The article stated that the main problem affecting the mini 14 is the barrel is too small and that allows it to whip. Of course they are selling a $250 do it yourself fix it kit for the gun. Two questions: 1 - is the main accuracy trouble with the mini 14 the barrell being too small? 2- Anybody have any experience with the Clark Custom barrel sleeve?

Yes I have heard the main acc problem is barrel stress when manufactured, if so that may well cure the problem. It may not be as accurate as a new quality barrel but I guess it would depend on your acc requirments.

WyoMan the barrel is to small in diameter from just ahead of the chamber area of the barrel to the gas port area. The reason for this is IMHO is the poorly designed Op rod. the front of the rod is too large (they needed to give it some weight) the gas piston is to close to the barrel & therefore forces the barrel OD to be severly reduced. You can buy components from Brownells to help correct these shortcomings but they are expensive. They will allow you to use a FULL heavy barrel & not just a barrel that is heavy forward of the gas block. ------------------
