Ruger Vaquero scope base

Does anyone know of a scope base for a Ruger Vaquero? Have a buddy who wants a scope on his stainless 44. Thought there might be a clamp on base of some kind but couldn't find one. The Vaquero has fixed sights and doesn't have any base screw holes. Thanks and God Bless, Louis

Toomany ToolsSuggest to your friend he might want to consider selling the Vaquero and getting a Super Redhawk which is much more suited to having a scope on it.

youngoutdoorsDon't think he wants to part with it. Doesn't anybody make a mount for the Vaquero? Would it weaken the top strap too much to drill and tap it? He even mentioned that he would like me to weld a mount on it if I could. I dont really want to do that. Thanks again, Louis

Toomany ToolsFrankly, if I were you I'd find another friend. IMO these are both stupid ideas. The Vaquero is a very fine single-action pistol and was never intended to have a scope fitted. No one makes a mount and that should be a clue. The idea of welding something on is INCREDIBLY STUPID!
Now, if what I've said here offends, I'm truly sorry as that is not my intent. I've never been a "yes" man and maybe that's why I'm where I am now, but at least I sleep well knowing I've given my best and always been frank and honest.

youngoutdoorsCan't ask more than honesty from anyone and I appreciate the frank too! This guy is in his 80's and doesn't want to hunt with anything but "my 44". But his eyes don't wont to let him see the sights. If it means him hunting a few more years or not I will try to keep him hunting. I may try to make a clamp on mount myself or drill and tap a base on it. Last resort is welding. Thanks anyway, Louis

I have a vaquero bisley in 45LC, that has been with me on several (mis)adventures, and sometimes I WISH it had a scope... it's very accurate, just that the sights are, well, BASIC.

Toomany ToolsI give up. Why not just cut some Picatinny Rail slots into the top stap? Maybe JB Weld will hold? Maybe you can weld it and then pull the top strap from his forehead after he fires it?
He didn't live to be 80+ without being disapointed once in a while. Tell him it is not feasible; take him to the local gun shop and buy him a Blackhawk or ever better a Redhawk.

He was given an alternative that didn't involve welding, and uses a well known, if unpretty, method for scope attachment.... used on shotguns, ruger 22 pistols, and a better solution than the MILLIONS of sks dust cover scope mounts
The man has a vaquero, and wants to keep a vaquero, next he wants a scope.

Your suggestion is feasible, although a lot of work and unwieldy it would prevent a dangerous alteration to the pistol. I'll stand by my first recommendation. Buy him a Redhawk; everyone needs another gun.

nordrsetaHow about silver soldering a custom base to the barrel (which could be refinished or replaced later)? Or a fella might remove the ejector rod and housing and fabricate a clamped base such as was used by Seyfried back when he was working on an article about one moa revolvers (G&A, forget the year). If the old guy can live without an ejector the pistol can be put right when he's done with it...

youngoutdoorsI offered a 41 of my own but he wants to hunt with his own handgun. I think I could make a clamp on base for the barrel that would work. I hadn't even thought about that. One from the grip would work also. Thanks for the input guys! God Bless, Louis
