This id like to ask, cause I have an mauser action coming up for some tuning work soon, and am curious how vital it is to have the thread single point cut, and what the general tolerance/concentricity is in M98 receivers in that area and in general. Lothar Walther have no problem producing screw in barrels for the M98, so I guess M98 actions are reasonably accurate to begin with. LotharWalther are know for their high quality close tolerance barrels.

As far as I know virtually all gunsmiths single point the barrel threads..... As to how concentric is the firing pin in the action to the thread pitch diameter.....IMO it's good enough.....no one makes benchrest rifles from Mausers (well not very many do) and the cost to make it "dead concentric" is IMO far far too much..... I wouldn't ever suggest that "squaring" a military Mauser is worth the money. (some will disagree on this however.) I do screw the action to a plug against the inner ring tightly and cut the front face of the action ring to clean up.....this insures that the inner ring and front face are somewhat parallel.....and I'm not at all sure that is needed either. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Vapo, I guess im one of those that will disagree with the statement that "squaring a mauser isnt worth the money" I could not entertain the idea of putting an uncorrected m98 receiver in quality walnut. A well tuned&squared m98 in quality walnut(done correctly), can give 3-shot clove leaf groups, dont know if thats considered benchrest or essential, but its certainly better than minute-of-bear ,...and very satisfying

I've got to assume he is refering to single point re-cutting the receiver threads concentric to the action bore. I set my actions up in a jig and indicate the raceway to run with one or two tenths, then single point the face, the lug abutments and the threads all in this one set-up. But it don't cost me a thing, and hell, set up takes three times as long as making the cuts. I do think its important that the chamber be square with the boltway, and square threads help insure that. Is this all necessary? Of course not. Is it necessary to use a custom rifle to kill a deer or a bear...All this stuff is relative. Why would I spend as long as an hour to get an action running true enough for my piece of mind, and then not re-cut the threads? I wouldn't.
