A few years back I bought the Brownells one, it was cheap back then but before I start to send time and money to modify it I'd like to see what some of you use.

The nicest ones I've seen have all been own make affairs, perhaps I'll get enough good ideas here to make or modify my own. Much of what I will do is two piece stocks so I need something that will work with shorter pieces.

Thanks, Rob

I have the Ralph Bone designed cradle. Works very well for rifle and two piece stocks.

Bill,

Did you purchase the cradle or build it from plans? I can't seem to find out much about it.

Thanks, Rob

I built my own.....but I'm such a lousy checkerer that I haven't used it in the last ten years.....it is all Walnut and has ball bearings in it....
Maybe I'll start relearning checkering this winter!

I built mine using unistrut and a couple C-clamps. It's mounted on a Wilton pwr-arm.

Now...where did you find the Wilton? I don't think they make it anymore, do they?

You can get them here: Southern Tool. I have two of them: one for my Wilton 925 vise (much harder to find) and one for my checkering cradle.

What size would you need for checkering 20#? 30#?

I use the #301 rated for 70#.

I think they have the wrong picture next to the 301 as it is not hydraulic like the 303 is, which is rated for 150#.
