I am looking for a grip cap that is just flat (not like the NECG that has a sort of 'tube' to hold stuff) that will allow me to retrofit a model 70 so I can store a Talley Peep in the grip. Let me know what you know... _Baxter

I know that Duane Wiebe had planned to do a run of trap door grip caps. I believe he put it on the back burner after testing the water and finding that I was the only one interested. Talley used to make them, I had a nice engraved one. The door was not hinged, it was removable via threads with a coin slot. Regards, Joe __________________________ You can lead a human to logic but you can't make him think. NRA Life since 1976. God bless America!

Instead of storing a Talley Peep in the grip why don't you buy a Brockman's Pop-Up Peep Sight. "The latest sight innovation from Brockman's. This sight allow you to have an instant Ghost Ring sight available as your back up sight system. This completely new sight is integrated into a custom Talley base. The sight compresses into the base as the scope is set onto the bases with Talley Q.D. rings. As the scope is removed, the sight springs upward to the proper height to allow use with a high combed stock. Just like all of our Ghost Ring sights, the pop-up peep is windage and elevation adjustable. Price includes front and rear base with integrated peep sight. Currently only available for Win. M70 Classic and Montana Rifle Co. Model 1999." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "The government consists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have, taking one with another, no special talent for the business of government; they have only a talent for getting and holding office. Their principal device to that end is to search out groups who pant and pine for something they can't get and to promise to give it to them. Nine times out of ten that promise is worth nothing. The tenth time is made good by looting A to satisfy B. In other words, government is a broker in pillage, and every election is sort of an advance auction sale of stolen goods." -- H. L. I'm a little puzzled as to why that's offered "only" for two rifles. I don't know why they don't just sell the sight. It looks like a basic L-shaped unit held on with one screw. It looks like you could drill and tap any rear base with enough linear space and screw it on. I have added ghost rings to the rear of Leupold bases, and I believe the brockman would certainly fit on too.

Pig Farmer, that is exactly what I have on the rifle now. Problem is, I want to put a different scope on the rifle and there will not be enough room for the power ring and the sight. It was a bit of a pain to get it working as is with a fixed power scope. Also, after getting pretty damn wet in the elk woods this year I am wondering about the long term effect of getting rain in the little spring mechanism. Art S. you are correct, there is only a single screw that holds the sight to the base. I had Mark Stratton build me bases for this rifle and he adapted the Brockman to the base he made.

Also you might consider a belly trap or trap buttplate if Talley no longer makes his special trap grip cap. IMO you are correct about the rain and the spring, no sense in taking chances on such a problematic and not-too-simple-or-sturdy design, too many things to go wrong in the bush. KISS! The Talley peep is slightly larger than all of the hinged doors that I've ever seen, except those custom-made using a Krag or 1903 butt trap door as the grip cap door. I believe that's why Talley made his coin-slotted-door grip cap, so the hole could be larger. FWIW I like traps a lot, use quite a few different sorts all the time as one of my signature features on most of my own customs, and I've never seen a trap grip cap with the integral cavity that was large enough for the Talley peep. Too bad. Regards, Joe __________________________ You can lead a human to logic but you can't make him think. NRA Life since 1976. God bless America!

Thanks for the info. Other than butt traps (that would affect the LOP after the pachmayer was taken of, an ideas how to store the peep?

Belly trap. Also good for cleaning gear, ammo and/or spares of various types. Later I'll post pics of some, right now My Bride is calling! Regards, Joe __________________________ You can lead a human to logic but you can't make him think. NRA Life since 1976. God bless America!

A few traps, showing the 2 most common styles of belly trap that are available in the US. There's also a side-hinged style but I don't have one. I like traps. Being of simple mind, I just drill a small compartment under the recoil pad..I carry a small multitool anyway..it's a five minute job to take of the pad, remove the peep and replace the pad...just a thought

I actually thought of a kick-ass design this weekend for a high-capacity easy-to-install grip gap. Will make a drawing and see if I can get a machinist to build it. MAybe i'll market it if if turns our viable. :-)

Here's another trap grip cap with still a different approach. The front edge hides a Redfield-style 90-degree dovetail and there's a spring-loaded ball-&-recess retainer for it. The cavity is still not quite large enough for the Talley peep though. This one holds a spare low wall firing pin. What about a "standard" steel grip cap held on with a couple of small neodymium magnets? You would probably need a knife blade to pry it open.

JD Jim Kobe put one like that on a 416 he built for an ACGG engraver. Pretty neat. Jim didn't know who made the grip cap as it was customer supplied. Do you know the manufacturer of that grip-cap? I got mine from Brownell's many years ago and have a vague impression that it was a NECG product. They were also offered with a scalloped base as well as flat, and also without the trap cavity. I shoulda bought several.... Regards, Joe __________________________ You can lead a human to logic but you can't make him think. NRA Life since 1976. God bless America!

I do like that swing door type cap and in fact was very close to what I was thinking of with a different type retainer... ah, the search goes on...
